West Ham United come from behind to draw 1-1 with Premier League top-four hopefuls Newcastle United at St James' Park.

West Ham United came from behind to draw 1-1 with Premier League top-four hopefuls Newcastle United at St James' Park in Saturday's late kickoff.

Eddie Howe's side took the lead in just the third minute of the contest, with Callum Wilson finding the back of the net, but West Ham were level in the 32nd minute through Lucas Paqueta, and neither team could find a winner in the entertaining contest.

The result has left Newcastle in fourth spot in the Premier League table, two points behind third-placed Manchester United and four ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in fifth.

West Ham, meanwhile, have climbed one position into 16th, with the Hammers moving onto 19 points from their 21 league matches during what has been a disappointing campaign to date.

Newcastle thought that they had taken the lead inside the first minute at St James' Park, with Miguel Almiron finding Joe Willock, who fired home from close range, but the ball had just gone out before the cross was delivered, with West Ham given a huge let-off in the early moments.

The Magpies were not to be denied, though, and made the breakthrough in the third minute when Wilson raced onto a pass from Sean Longstaff before finishing into the back of the net.

Howe's side came close to a second in the 24th minute when Dan Burn headed the ball down inside the West Ham box, but his fellow defender Fabian Schar could only lift his effort over the crossbar.

West Ham's first serious attempt came in the 28th minute through Said Benrahma, but the attacker curled high of the Newcastle crossbar after finding a yard of space inside the penalty box.

Paqueta then just missed the post with a low strike during a strong spell for the away team, and there was a leveller for David Moyes's side in the 32nd minute, with Paqueta converting at the far post after Newcastle had failed to deal with a corner from the left.

Benrahma dragged an attempt wide of the Newcastle post in the 37th minute, before Nayef Aguerd headed a golden chance over the home side's crossbar in the final chance of the first period.

Newcastle had a shout for a penalty in the 57th minute when Joelinton went down inside the box under pressure from Aguerd, but the referee instead booked the Magpies attacker for simulation.

Anthony Gordon was introduced for his Newcastle debut in the 69th minute, and the attacker certainly lifted the home crowd, who had been quietened by West Ham's strong defensive work.

Wilson almost had a brilliant chance to score a second in the 76th minute when he broke through on goal, but Aguerd came from nowhere to make a brilliant last-ditch challenge.

Wilson had another opportunity in the 81st minute when he climbed highest inside the West Ham box, but the striker placed his header into the arms of Lukasz Fabianski, before Schar headed over from a corner moments later.

As expected, Newcastle were the team pressing for a winner in the latter stages, but West Ham held firm to draw just their fourth league game of the campaign.

Newcastle will be back in league action against Bournemouth next Saturday, while West Ham will be bidding to build on the result when they host Chelsea on the same afternoon.
