Brighton & Hove Albion move back up to sixth in the Premier League after beating Bournemouth 1-0.

Brighton & Hove Albion have moved back up into sixth place in the Premier League table after Kaoru Mitoma's late goal saw them beat Bournemouth 1-0.

After notching the last-gasp winner against Liverpool last weekend, the in-form Japanese wide man was on-hand again to send the Amex delirious today.

On a day where many of Bournemouth's relegation rivals have picked up vital victories, Gary O'Neil will be devastated that his side threw away a precious point with just minutes remaining.

Everton's victory earlier today means they have dropped a place to 19th, and with Leeds United and West Ham United still to play, they could be even further from safety at the end of the weekend.

It looked as though the Seagulls would rue some missed chances in a game where they were expected to win, but they got the job done despite a rather lacklustre second half performance.

The club clearly have ambitions of European qualification given that they were so eager to keep Moises Caicedo at the club despite strong interest from Arsenal at the end of the January transfer window.

The Ecuadorian returned to the matchday squad after being told to stay at home until the transfer deadline passed on Tuesday.

He was named only as a substitute though, with Roberto De Zerbi opting to give Billy Gilmour just his second league start in Brighton colours instead.

Bournemouth named both of their new attacking reinforcements in the starting XI, with Hamed Junior Traore and Antoine Semenyo in from the off.

On his full Premier League debut, Deniz Undav missed an extraordinary triple chance inside the opening quarter of an hour.

A tame first effort was blocked before Neto parried his second effort straight back into his path as he then struck the post.

The German striker replace the injured Evan Ferguson in attack and netted 26 goals in the Belgian top flight for Union Saint-Gilloise last season, and he really should have opened his Premier League account here.

In a first half largely dominated in terms of possession and chances by Brighton, Pascal Gross also had an effort cleared off the line shortly before the interval.

Bournemouth had their moments and felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Dango Ouattara went down in the box midway through the first half, but referee Craig Pawson was unmoved.

Ouattara again had a sighter early in the second half, but he skied his header from inside the six-yard box.

The second half saw fewer chances at both ends, and it seemed as though the game was destined to end goalless, as Gilmour and Ouattara both missed good chances in front of goal for either side.

However, the pivotal moment of the game came with just three minutes remaining, as a backpedalling Mitoma did excellently to direct Jeremy Sarmiento's cross goalwards, and Neto, despite getting a hand to it, failed to keep it out.

That was the third consecutive game in which Mitoma has scored, and since returning from the World Cup, he has scored five goals in eight starts.

Bournemouth failed to respond by putting any pressure on in injury time as Brighton held on for another win.

That result marked a sixth win in eight games for De Zerbi's side since returning from the World Cup break, while Bournemouth are now on a run of 11 defeats in their last 14.

The visitors may bemoan the lack of decisions that went in their favour, but scoring just one goal in their six Premier League games since the season's resumption emphasises their struggles.

It does not get any easier for the Cherries either, as they welcome Champions League-chasing Newcastle United to the Vitality Stadium next weekend.

Brighton have the small prospect of the M23 derby against Crystal Palace in their next outing as their push for Europe continues to gain momentum.
