Sheffield Wednesday Danny Rohl viewed as 'managerial candidate' by Bundesliga giants

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl is reportedly being considered for the head coach position at a Bundesliga giant.

Sheffield Wednesday may allegedly face a battle to retain the services of head coach Danny Rohl.

In October 2023, the Owls took the decision to appoint the relatively-unknown German as their new boss to kick-start their bid to avoid relegation from the Championship.

The former assistant manager to the Germany national team has since worked wonders at Hillsborough, keeping Sheffield Wednesday in the second tier of English football during 2023-24 and establishing them as a mid-table club this time around.

However, it is far from plain-sailing behind the scenes, the club's players having recently not been paid their March wages on time.

As a result, there is an air of uncertainty at the Yorkshire outfit off the pitch, and speculation has emerged where supporters will have doubts over whether their impressive head coach will remain in the dugout in the long term.

Return to Germany in the offing?

As per Sky Sport Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg, who was commenting on X, RB Leipzig are ready to consider an approach for the 35-year-old.

Plettenberg alleges that a number of important figures at Red Bull, including head of global soccer and former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, have been left impressed with Rohl's footballing philosophy.

That has led to Rohl becoming a new candidate for the Bundesliga giants who recently sacked Marco Rose courtesy of their ongoing disappointing campaign.

Leipzig suffered an early elimination from the Champions League and currently sit in fifth place in the Bundesliga table, 23 points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich.

With just a five-point advantage over ninth position, Leipzig remain at risk of not achieving European qualification unless they produce a solid finish to the season.

The report adds that Rohl is only one of several names in the frame, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Roger Schmidt, most recently at Benfica, also under consideration.

Is a Sheffield Wednesday exit inevitable?

Holding a contract until 2027, Rohl is tied to Sheffield Wednesday for another two seasons, yet that will not stop interest in his services.

Not only as Rohl already been a coach at RB Leipzig, he has also been on the backroom staff at Southampton, another team that require a new manager.

Given the circumstance when he arrived, posting a record of 33 wins, 18 draws and 32 defeats is exceptional, Sheffield Wednesday in a far better position on the pitch than before his arrival.

However, with the club eight points behind the playoffs with six games remaining and the recent episode behind the scenes leaving a sour taste, Rohl may be open-minded to considering his options should an offer be put his way.
