A Premier League club is allegedly prepared to make Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha their 'top target' of the summer transfer window.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has allegedly been identified as the 'top target' of a Premier League club ahead of the summer transfer window.

Since his arrival in January 2023, Cunha has developed into one of the best players in the club's history and helped Wolves attract a higher level of player.

A total of 31 goals and 13 assists have come from 85 appearances in all competitions, the Brazil international also aiding the club's efforts to sign the likes of compatriots Joao Gomes and Andre.

However, despite penning a new contract in February, it has been widely reported that Cunha can leave Molineux if a £62.5m release clause is activated later this year.

Cunha, himself, has also acknowledged that he has ambitions to win trophies elsewhere, with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United having already been linked with his signature.

Newcastle to enter Cunha race?

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are preparing to join the race for the versatile playmaker.

The report suggests that the Magpies hierarchy are ready to make the 25-year-old their top target once the market reopens in June.

Eddie Howe is a manager who has shown a preference to acquire players that are capable of being deployed in more than one position, Cunha fitting the bill on that front.

Howe is said to be of the opinion that Cunha can be deployed as the most attack-minded option of his midfield three, as well as down the flanks and down the centre of his forward line.

Furthermore, Newcastle are allegedly hopeful that the presence of fellow Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton could help their cause.

Nevertheless, it is emphasised that Champions League qualification may be required, both from a financial perspective and to convince Cunha to move to St James' Park.

Is a transfer realistic?

A recent report claimed that Cunha would show preference to signing for a bonafide "top-six" club, a group that has not previously featured Newcastle.

Times have changed, though, and with Newcastle guaranteed European football next season, they may be viewed as a more attractive option than the likes of Tottenham Hotspur.

Realistically, however, Newcastle remain behind the likes of Arsenal and Man United, particularly the former who are highly likely to be participating in next season's Champions League.

Much may depend on what offers arrive for Cunha. Despite the clause that is in place, some suitors may not be prepared to go as high as £62.5m, regardless of Cunha's reputation being enhanced during his time in the West Midlands.
