Manchester City reportedly decide to step up their interest in a potential successor to goalkeeper Ederson following an injury blow.

Manchester City are said to have decided to step up their interest in Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa in response to Ederson's injury.

The champions emerged as 2-0 victors against Everton on Saturday afternoon but were forced to field backup shot-stopper Stefan Ortega between the posts.

First-choice Ederson was taken off during his side's match against Crystal Palace on April 12 in the 71st minute, and Guardiola clarified prior to his team's clash against Everton that he did not know when the goalkeeper would be available.

The 31-year-old was dropped by Guardiola earlier in the season, and with speculation that the Brazilian could be sold in the summer, it would not be surprising if a new face was brought to the Etihad.

A report from The Mirror claims that the Citizens will look to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who can be signed should his £63m buy-out clause be met.

Is it time to move on from Ederson?

Ederson's groin injury is reported to have been an issue that has troubled him for much of the season, and it is easy to see how his injury problems could worsen as he ages.

It should also be noted that the 31-year-old has faced scrutiny for his performances, with some pundits levelling accusations at him that he has been subpar when facing shots.

However, while Costa is excellent with the ball at his feet, there are few goalkeepers anywhere in Europe as accomplished in possession as Ederson.

The City goalkeeper registered his fourth assist of the Premier League season when his long-range pass set up a goal for James McAtee against Crystal Palace.

In fact, no shot-stopper in Premier League history has produced more assists than Ederson (7), and only Savinho, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Matheus Nunes have more top-flight assists this term amongst his teammates.

City tried to rejuvenate their team in the January transfer window, making numerous youthful additions, but replacing Ederson could be risky given how fundamental he has been to the way City have played under Guardiola.
