Liverpool's Mohamed Salah breaks the record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game Premier League season with a stunning assist for Luis Diaz against West Ham.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah broke the record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game Premier League season with a stunning assist for Luis Diaz against West Ham United.

The 32-year-old sat on an astonishing 44 direct contributions before Sunday's game, registering 27 goals of his own and 17 assists from his first 31 top-flight games of the campaign.

Salah's previous total put him in joint first place for a 38-game campaign, as Erling Haaland (in 2022-23) and Thierry Henry (in 2002-03) also had a direct hand in 44 goals in previous Premier League seasons.

However, on his first appearance since signing a new two-year contract, Salah left Henry and Haaland in his wake with a 45th involvement, an exceptional assist for Diaz in the 18th minute.

After striding away from young left-back Oliver Scarles on the wing, Salah spotted Diaz's run to the back post and picked out the Colombian with a perfectly-weighted outside-of-the-boot pass.

Diaz did the rest with a simple finish from a couple of yards out, as Salah both broke the 38-game record and also ended a four-match drought without a goal or assist in all tournaments.

How many contributions does Salah need for the all-time Premier League record?

It was only matter of time before Salah officially posted the greatest individual 38-game season in Premier League history, and it will likely only be a matter of time before he breaks the 42-game record too.

When the Premier League comprised 22 teams, Alan Shearer and Andy Cole both managed an unrivalled 47 goal contributions in one season, the former doing so in 1994-95 and Cole in 1993-94.

With Salah now sitting on 45, he needs just two more direct involvements to equal Cole and Shearer and only three more to hit the 48 mark, which would see the electrifying Egyptian enjoy the greatest individual Premier League season of all time.

Furthermore, if Salah sets up another three goals between now and the end of the season, he would have registered more assists than any other player in a single Premier League campaign; Henry and Kevin De Bruyne are the joint record holders with 20.
