Manchester City midfielder Jacob Wright is reportedly closing in on a move to Championship club Swansea City.

Manchester City youngster Jacob Wright is reportedly closing in on a move to Championship club Swansea City.

The midfielder joined the Citizens' academy at the age of eight in 2014 and worked his way through the club's youth ranks before establishing himself as a star player for their Under-18s and Elite Development Squad.

In the 2023-24 season, Wright made 30 appearances for City's Elite Development Squad, while he was also handed his first-team debut by Pep Guardiola in an FA Cup third-round win over Huddersfield Town and his maiden Champions League outing as a substitute against Copenhagen.

The 19-year-old then travelled with Man City's senior side to the United States for their pre-season tour last summer and has since been around the first-team picture, albeit being very much on the periphery of Guardiola's squad.

Indeed, Wright has made just two substitute outings in the EFL Cup for Man City this term, although he has impressed at youth level once again, recording three goals and six assists in 11 Premier League 2 matches.

Although Wright is rated highly by Man City, the midfielder is seemingly keen to gain regular first-team football and is ready to make the next step in his career.

Swansea set to sign midfield duo Wright, O'Brien

According to the Manchester Evening News, Wright is set to join second-tier side Swansea and has travelled to South Wales as talks have accelerated for the teenager's departure from the Etihad Stadium.

The report adds that Wright is expected to complete an initial loan move to the Swans for the rest of the season and they will have an obligation to buy the midfielder for around £4m in the summer, providing that they stay in the Championship.

Swansea have stepped up their pursuit of Wright after Matt Grimes ended his near 10-year association with the club to join Frank Lampard's Coventry City earlier this month for a fee between £3.5m and £4m.

Wright is not the only midfielder set to join Swansea before the transfer window closes, as BBC Sport reports that Luke Williams' side are poised to complete the loan signing of Nottingham Forest's Lewis O'Brien.

It is claimed that Swansea look to have fended off competition from several clubs in the race to sign O'Brien, who was on loan at Los Angeles FC earlier this season.

Both O'Brien - formerly of Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough - and Wright are set to join a Swansea side currently sitting 17th in the Championship table, seven points clear of the relegation zone and 10 points behind the playoffs.
