Preview: Dundee vs. Motherwell - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Scottish Premiership clash between Dundee and Motherwell, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Dundee will continue their battle against relegation from the Scottish Premiership when they host Motherwell at Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts are 10th in the league table and just two points above the drop zone, while the visitors are seventh in the standings and seven points clear of the bottom two.

Dundee, following their promotion from the Scottish Championship in 2022-23, secured a superb sixth-placed finish in the top flight last season, taking 42 points from their 38 outings.

Tony Docherty would have been hoping to build on last campaign's finish, but the Dark Blues have endured a disappointing term and are now fighting to avoid relegation from the top flight.

Dundee went into the post-split fixtures sitting 11th in the table with 34 points from 33 games, after nine wins, seven draws and 17 defeats, but a crucial 1-0 victory against Hearts in the opening post-split match has lifted them to 10th in the standings.

Now ahead of Ross County by two points with four games left to play, Dundee will be desperate to build on their recent victory to ensure they stay in the top flight for another year.

Next up for the Dark Blues is Motherwell, who come into the clash having ended a four-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over St Johnstone in their first post-split fixture.

That victory lifted the Steelmen to top of the relegation round table, two points ahead of eight-placed Hearts and a significant seven points clear of the drop zone with just 12 points left to play for.

Michael Wimmer, who was appointed in February 2025 following the departure of Stuart Kettlewell, will be confident of keeping his side in the division as a result, but a win on Saturday would confirm their survival.

The Steelmen have often shared the spoils in their clashes with Dundee, as Motherwell have won three, drawn three and lost three of the past nine league encounters.

Team News

Dundee may be without the services of Sebastian Palmer-Houlden after the winger was taken off just after the hour mark in the 1-0 victory against Hearts, meaning Finlay Robertson could start here.

Elsewhere, the remainder of the side that started in that victory is expected to feature on Saturday, with top scorer Simon Murray continuing to lead the line after netting five in his last five outings.

The visitors are expected to be without up to 10 players for Saturday's encounter, including Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, Archie Mair, Jack Vale, Kofi Balmer, Liam Gordon, Paul McGinn, Ross Callachan, Sam Nicholson, Shane Blaney and Zach Robinson.

Motherwell ended their four-game winless run with a 4-2 victory in their last outing, and Wimmer may decide to name an unchanged starting 11 as a result.

Dundee possible starting lineup:
Carson; Astley, Shaughnessy, Robertson, Larkeche; Robertson, Mulligan, Portales, Cameron, Tiffoney; Murray

Motherwell possible starting lineup:
Balcombe; Koutroumbis, O'Donnell, Casey, Thompson; Sparrow, Halliday, Miller, Paton; Slattery, Watt

We say: Dundee 1-1 Motherwell

Dundee and Motherwell have equally won three and lost three in their last nine encounters, and given that balance in results, we expect this one to end in a stalemate.
