Spanish authorities are keeping details under wraps as they negotiate with Formula 1 to extend the race contract for the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
The circuit's current agreement expires in 2026, coinciding with the debut of a long-term street race in Madrid, which will take over the official 'Spanish GP' title.
The shift leaves Barcelona's race without a confirmed name for next year. "We'll see what it will be called in a few days, months," Miquel Samper, the regional minister for business, told Spanish media at the launch of the 2025 Spanish GP in Barcelona.
"I can't say anything more because I don't know anything more, and we can't even say the things we know," he added.
Samper, however, emphasised the determination to keep the event alive, stating: "What is clear is that we want to continue to organise this grand prix. It's obvious that we all know it's ending next year, and we're negotiating the extension of this contract."
Earlier this year, Barcelona secured a MotoGP contract extension through 2031, and Samper highlighted the approach taken in those talks as a model. "As with the motorcycles, the key to these things going well is silence," he said. "The key to success is discretion. So we can't explain how the negotiations are going, although we are committed to communicating very quickly when agreements are reached - if they are reached.
"As of today, we are in the midst of negotiations."
Meanwhile, Montreal, whose F1 contract already extends to 2031, is reportedly seeking a longer-term deal inspired by Miami's recent agreement through 2041.
An unnamed Quebec government source told Le Journal de Montreal: "We're seeing extensions of agreements elsewhere, so we have communicated our intentions. Discussions are cordial, but nothing suggests that it's not a possibility."
