Preview: Jagiellonia Bialystok vs. Real Betis - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday's Conference League clash between Jagiellonia Bialystok and Real Betis, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Real Betis will travel to Poland for Thursday's Conference League quarter-final second leg against Jagiellonia Bialystok.

The visitors have the upper hand after recording a 2-0 victory in Spain last week, leaving the hosts with significant work to do if they are to turn the tie in their favour.

Jagiellonia will view their European campaign as a success no matter what happens on Thursday, having made their first appearance in the main draw of a UEFA competition this season.

They missed out on a top-eight finish in the league phase on goal difference, before they went on to record a commanding 6-2 aggregate victory in the knockout round playoffs to set up a last-16 clash against Cercle Brugge.

After claiming a 3-0 win over 10-man Cercle in the home leg, Jagiellonia scraped through to the quarter-finals despite losing 2-0 in the return leg - a result which they unfortunately repeated in last week's away clash with Betis.

As a result, they have a mountain to climb if they are to turn the tie in their favour and advance to face Celje or Fiorentina in the semi-finals next month.

They will at least head into Thursday's fixture in a positive mood after they recorded a 1-0 victory in Sunday's away clash against Legia Warsaw to leave them in third place in the Ekstraklasa table and four points adrift of leaders Rakow Czestochowa.

They can also take confidence from the fact that they have won four of their five Conference League home games (D1), winning by a margin of two goals or more in each of those victories.

Betis, who finished in 15th place in the league phase, began the knockout rounds with a 3-1 aggregate win over Belgian side Gent, before they saw off Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes via a 6-2 aggregate scoreline, including a commanding 4-0 victory in the away leg.

Los Verdiblancos then took a step towards the semi-finals with a successful home outing in last Thursday's home clash, although they may have been slightly frustrated to only win by a 2-0 scoreline given their dominance in the contest.

Cedric Bakambu opened the scoring with his sixth Conference League goal of the season - the most scored by any Betis player in a single European campaign - before Jesus Rodriguez found the net to become the club's fourth-youngest goalscorer in UEFA competition.

That result extended Betis' unbeaten run to nine competitive matches, but that impressive run ultimately came to an end in Sunday's 2-1 home defeat against Villarreal, leaving Los Verdiblancos in sixth spot in La Liga and three points adrift of fifth position, which could become an extra Champions League spot.

Manuel Pellegrini's side will try to get their top-five bid back on track in Sunday's meeting with Girona, but first, they will need to negotiate Thursday's second leg as they look to reach a European semi-final for the first time in their history.

Encouragingly for the visitors, they have won each of their last three Conference League away games without conceding since losing 2-1 to Mlada Boleslav in November.

Team News

Jagiellonia boss Adrian Siemieniec is expected to be without the defensive duo of Adrian Dieguez and Michal Sacek due to injury.

Midfielder Leon Flach is a doubt for the second leg after being forced off in the fifth minute of Sunday's win over Legia.

Jaroslaw Kubicki could come into the starting lineup if Flach is unable to provide his fitness in time for Thursday's second leg.

As for the visitors, they have confirmed that Diego Llorente will require surgery after he sustained a hamstring injury in the defeat to Villarreal.

Like Llorente, Chimy Avila is also set to miss the rest of the season after it was revealed he had suffered a thigh injury in training.

In positive news, Abde Ezzalzouli has returned to training following an ankle problem, putting him in line to feature in the matchday squad against Jagiellonia.

Jagiellonia Bialystok possible starting lineup:
Abramowicz; Wojtuszek, Skrzypczak, Ebosse, Moutinho; Kubicki, Romanczuk, Imaz; Churlinov, Hansen, Pululu

Real Betis possible starting lineup:
Vieites; Sabaly, Bartra, Natan, Rodriguez; Cardoso, Altimira; Antony, Isco, Rodriguez; Bakambu

We say: Jagiellonia Bialystok 1-2 Real Betis

Betis proved to be a cut above Jagiellonia in the first leg and probably should have won the game by a bigger margin.

While we believe that Jagiellonia will offer a stiffer test with home advantage in their favour, we think that Betis will do enough to build upon last week's performance by claiming a narrow win in Poland.
