Preview: Cardiff City vs. Luton Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship clash between Cardiff City and Luton Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two relegation-threatened sides will face off when Cardiff City welcome Luton Town to the Cardiff City Stadium for Tuesday's Championship fixture.

The Hatters are languishing in the relegation zone with 31 points, while the hosts are five points better off in 21st spot in the Championship table.

Match preview

Cardiff head into the midweek fixture on the back of an underwhelming run of form which has seen them win one, draw two and lose four of their last seven league matches.

Their only victory in that period took place on February 25 when they recorded a 1-0 home win over Hull City thanks to Callum Robinson's second-half effort.

The Bluebirds have gone on to lose back-to-back league matches, falling to a 2-1 home defeat against Burnley, before experiencing the same scoreline against another promotion contender in Saturday's away meeting with Sunderland.

Isaak Davies netted a 41st-minute equaliser to send Cardiff into the break on level terms, but Chris Mepham found the net in the 77th minute to condemn the Bluebirds to a third defeat in four away Championship matches.

Omer Riza's side will be looking forward to returning to the Cardiff City Stadium where they have won three of their last five matches (D1, L1).

The hosts will hope that home advantage can help them claim their first victory over Luton since clinching a 2-1 away win in November 2021.

Luton will have to pick themselves up after they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat in Saturday's away clash against promotion-chasing Burnley.

The Hatters travelled to Turf Moor with renewed belief after they ended a 12-game winless league run with a narrow 1-0 home victory over Portsmouth.

However, the positivity built from that result was extinguished by a disastrous outing at Turf Moor, as Burnley took full advantage of Kal Naismith's 19th-minute red card to net four goals without reply to condemn the Hatters to a third consecutive away defeat, leaving them five points adrift of safety.

In fact, Luton have now lost 14 of their last 15 Championship road trips since they recorded their most recent away victory in September's meeting with Millwall.

They can at least take confidence from the fact that they have won each of their last four meetings with the Bluebirds, including a narrow 1-0 win in November's reverse fixture thanks to Jacob Brown's 57th-minute effort.

The Hatters would certainly be delighted if they could record another clean sheet against Cardiff, having conceded at least two goals in 13 of their last 15 away matches.

Team News

Cardiff City's Ollie Tanner on December 29, 2024© Imago

The hosts are unable to call upon Jak Alnwick, Joe Ralls Ollie Tanner, Yakou Meite, David Turnbull and Jesper Daland.

Andy Rinomhota remains a doubt after he sat out Saturday's defeat to Cardiff with a hamstring issue that he sustained in last Tuesday's clash with Burnley.

Will Alves is pushing for a starting spot after returning from a three-game injury absence to play over half-hour against Sunderland.

As for the visitors, Luton remain without Marvelous Nakamba and Shandon Baptiste due to calf injuries, while Teden Mengi and Tahith Chong are sidelined with knee and hamstring issues.

Defender Mark McGuinness is set to replace Naismith, who will serve a one-match after being sent off for two bookable offences in Saturday's defeat to Burnley.

Bloomfield could decide to make changes to his forward line, with Brown and Carlton Morris pushing for recalls after dropping down to the bench at Turf Moor.

Cardiff City possible starting lineup:
Horvath; Ng, Goutas, Bagan, O'Dowda; Chambers, Mannsverk; Colwill, Alves, Davies; Salech

Luton Town possible starting lineup:
Kaminski; Makosso, McGuinness, Bell; Jones, Walsh, Clark, Aasgaard, Doughty; Morris, Brown

We say: Cardiff City 2-0 Luton Town

Cardiff have won three of their last five home outings, and with that in mind, we think that they will take all three points from Tuesday's fixture, especially as Luton have lost 14 of their last 15 away league matches.
