Marcus Rashford says that he was dropped from Manchester United's starting XI against Wolverhampton Wanderers after being late for a team meeting.

Marcus Rashford has revealed that he was dropped from Manchester United's starting XI against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday after being late for a team meeting.

The England international was a notable absentee from the Red Devils team sheet for the clash at Molineux.

Man United head coach Erik ten Hag said ahead of the contest that Rashford had been named on the bench rather than in the first XI due to an "internal disciplinary issue".

The 25-year-old was introduced as a half-time substitute, though, and he came up with the winning goal in the 76th minute, with the result sending the Red Devils into fourth spot in the Premier League table.

Rashford, who also had a goal disallowed at Molineux due to a handball, has said that he "was a little bit late for a meeting", and the forward is now keen to "draw a line under it".

"I was a little bit late for a meeting - I overslept," Rashford told BT Sport.

"It's the team rules and it's a mistake that can happen, but I'm disappointed not to play, but I understand the decision and I'm happy that we managed to win the game anyway. I think we can draw a line under it and move on.

"I'm in a good place and I'm just pleased with the way that we're progressing. In the past, we could easily have lost that game or drawn it."

Rashford has now scored 10 goals and registered four assists in 21 appearances for Man United during the 2022-23 campaign, and he has netted in his three games for the club since the World Cup.

Ten Hag has praised the Englishman for his reaction off the bench in the success over Wolves.

"After the decision, he came in, he was bright, he was lively, he scored a goal - that is the right reaction," the Red Devils head coach told BT Sport.

"Of course [that is the end of the matter], but everyone has to match rules and values and, if you react like this, this is the right answer. We were not that good in the first half. In my opinion the second half was better. Fred was winning second balls and linking play when he came on.

"In the first half, you analyse the game but sometimes things do not work as expected. Wolves did not create many chances and we did but you have to be sharp. I was not happy at half time and I told them with this attitude they will not win this game and everyone had to give 10% more."

Man United will be bidding to make it four Premier League victories in a row when they welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford on January 3.
