Crystal Palace announce that 'true fans favourite' Will Hughes has extended his contract at the club.

Crystal Palace have announced that midfielder Will Hughes has extended his contract at the club.

The 29-year-old was due to see his previous contract expire in the summer, but he has now put pen to paper on a new deal that runs until the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

Hughes, who has been in talks with Palace over a new deal since February, has made 115 appearances for the Eagles across all competitions since joining the club from Watford for a reported £6m in August 2021.

The 'true fans favourite' - as described on Palace's official website - has featured regularly under Oliver Glasner this season, chipping in with five assists in 32 games, starting 19 of those in the Premier League.

Hughes made his 100th appearance for the Eagles in the club's 3-1 win at Brighton & Hove Albion in December, before wearing the captain's armband for the first time in their 2-1 victory over Southampton at Selhurst Park two weeks later.

Speaking to cpfc.co.uk after signing his new deal, Hughes said: "I'm extremely happy to sign a new contract. I've really enjoyed my time here, so I'm delighted to extend it by a couple of years in what's a really good moment as an individual and as a team collectively."

Glasner pleased to keep hold of "old-school" Hughes

Chairman Steve Parish added: "In addition to being an important player in our squad, Will exemplifies the hard work, humility - and humour - of our football club.

"He is a leader both on and off the pitch - a characteristic appreciated by both his teammates and supporters alike - and I am delighted to see him extend his time in red and blue."

Glasner also gave his verdict on the news at a press conference ahead of Palace's Premier League trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday, with Hughes in contention to start for the Eagles at St James' Park.

"It's not a surprise for me!" Glasner old reporters. "It's good. He's had an excellent season for us. He's very experienced. He's a more old-school guy, who talks with all the others and gives a very good energy in the locker room. He's a very important player for us.

"Also, his football, his passing, his fighting spirit are great, so I'm really pleased that we could extend his contract."

Palace will now weigh up whether to extend the contracts of both Nathaniel Clyne and captain Joel Ward, who are both set to see their current deals expire at the end of June.
