Tottenham Hotspur confirm that Joe Rodon has joined Rennes on loan with an option to buy for €20m (£16.7m).

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Joe Rodon has joined Ligue 1 side Rennes on loan with an option to buy.

The Wales international struggled for opportunities last term under Antonio Conte, with Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies forming the Italian's first-choice backline.

Davinson Sanchez is also ahead of Rodon in the Lilywhites pecking order, while Clement Lenglet has arrived on loan from Barcelona to reinforce the defence.

With Rodon searching for regular game time ahead of the 2022 World Cup, the former Swansea City man will ply his trade on loan at Rennes for the 2022-23 season.

Tottenham have also revealed that Les Rouges et Noir can choose to make Rodon's stay permanent at the end of the campaign, and the buyout clause is reported to be €20m (£16.7m).

Conte recently confirmed that Rodon would move abroad for the 2022-23 season, telling reporters at a press conference: "Joe Rodon is another good player and don't forget that in November there is the World Cup and many players want to play and play regularly.

"I think that when the thoughts from the club and the players are the same we try to find the best solution for both."

Rodon has made 24 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham since joining from Swansea in the summer of 2020, but he is still waiting for his first goal contribution for the North London club.

After making 12 Premier League appearances in the 2020-21 season, Rodon only featured three times in the 2021-22 top flight, playing just 86 minutes of league football in total.

Rodon started matches in the Europa Conference League and FA Cup, but all three of his Premier League matches came from the substitutes bench.

The Welshman becomes the fourth player to leave Tottenham on loan this summer, following Dane Scarlett, Troy Parrott and Alfie Whiteman out on temporary deals.

Meanwhile, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Steven Bergwijn and Jack Clarke have left on permanent moves, and the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil, Sergio Reguilon and Harry Winks could follow.

Villarreal have allegedly agreed to sign Lo Celso on loan with an obligation to buy for €15m (£12.6m), and a swap deal involving Ndombele and Pervis Estupinan with the Yellow Submarine has also been mooted.

Rodon arrives at Roazhon Park to replace Nayef Aguerd, who joined West Ham United in a big-money deal, but he has already suffered a serious ankle injury in the English capital.
