Barcelona director of football Deco reportedly makes a decision over his preferred choice for the club's next goalkeeper.

Barcelona director of football Deco has reportedly established who he would like to join the club's goalkeeping department in the future.

The current focus of the Catalan giants is on the pitch with Hansi Flick still able to deliver the quadruple in his first season in charge.

That is despite Barcelona being without first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen since September due to a serious knee injury.

Wojciech Szczesny, signed on a free transfer shortly afterwards, came out of retirement to become Barcelona's number one in recent months, playing a key role in their recent success.

Nevertheless, while there is the realistic possibility of the Polish stopper penning fresh terms for another campaign, the 34-year-old is not viewed as a long-term option between the sticks.

La Liga goalkeeper on radar?

As such, Barcelona will eventually need to consider alternatives, particularly for the 2026-27 campaign with Ter Stegen and Szczesny in line to be numbers one and two next season.

According to Catalunya Radio, Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro has been earmarked as a future arrival at Camp Nou.

The report suggests that contact has already been made with the representatives of the 30-year-old regarding a transfer at a later date.

With the Spain international holding a contract until 2027, it is suggested that a move in 2026 would appeal to Barcelona due to Remiro's asking price being reduced.

Remiro has been with Real Sociedad since 2019, with a total of 263 appearances in all competitions being made since his arrival and 110 clean sheets being recorded.

Despite Real Sociedad sitting down in eighth place in the La Liga table, Remiro has shipped just 31 goals across his 29 outings.

A waiting game for all concerned?

If everything works out with Deco's alleged plan, it would be viewed as a success for all concerned.

That said, Barcelona will be taking a risk if they intend to wait that long to sign Remiro, who will naturally have admirers elsewhere.

Now a two-cap Spain international, Remiro will plausibly receive offers in the summer, especially if his club do not earn a place in the Champions League or Europa League.

Much could depend on how Ter Stegen performs when he eventually returns from a long layoff. At this stage of his career, Remiro may show preference to first-team football.
