Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka joins Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

Borussia Dortmund have completed the loan signing of Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Earlier on deadline day, it was reported that the England Under-21 international was on the verge of joining Dortmund on a loan deal.

Chelsea have now confirmed that the 21-year-old has signed for the German giants on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Chukwuemeka becomes the second player to leave Chelsea on deadline day following Caleb Wiley's loan move to Championship side Watford.

Chukwuemeka buy option revealed

According to journalist Patrick Berger, Dortmund will have the option to make the loan move permanent for €35m (£29m).

Chelsea will allegedly earn a "high sell-on" from any future sale if Chukwuemeka joins Dortmund on a permanent basis.

The Bundesliga side are also expected to pay the midfielder's wages in full during the course of his loan spell at Signal Iduna Park.

Following the move, Chukwuemeka told Dortmund's official website: "I'm really excited and blessed to be here and represent this big club. I can't wait to play in front of the fans at Signal Iduna Park and bring success to us all."

Chukwuemeka becomes the latest English talent to move to Dortmund following in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho and his new teammate Jamie Gittens.

The Chelsea loanee has joined a side that are under new management following Niko Kovac's recent appointment as Dortmund boss.

Why have Chelsea allowed Chukwuemeka to depart?

While Dortmund competing in the Champions League knockout rounds, they are facing a real battle to secure a spot in next season's competition.

Dortmund are currently sitting in 11th spot in the Bundesliga table, with four points separating them from fourth-placed RB Leipzig.

While he may be joining Dortmund in a difficult period, Chukwuemeka will hope to gain regular playing time during his loan stint with Kovac's side.

The youngster has been allowed to depart Chelsea after failing to establish himself as a prominent figure in Enzo Maresca's plans.

Chukwuemeka has had to settle for just one start in five competitive matches across the Conference League and the EFL Cup.

Having left Stamford Bridge, he could make his Dortmund debut in Saturday's Bundesliga home clash with Stuttgart.
