Chelsea formally announce the signing of Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou.

Chelsea have formally announced the signing of Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou.

On Monday afternoon, it was widely claimed that the Blues had decided to press ahead with a deal for the France Under-19 international.

Despite a move not being confirmed by the 11pm deadline, several outlets insisted that Chelsea had completed the necessary process to sign the prospect.

Late on Tuesday afternoon, the West Londoners finally revealed that the 19-year-old had become their player, penning a long-term contract.

What is size of Amougou's contract?

In keeping with the model utilised by co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Amougou has been provided with an eight-year contract, keeping him at the club until June of 2033.

Although a transfer fee has not been disclosed, Fabrizio Romano has reported that the deal is worth €15m (£12.5m).

Chelsea have stated that Amougou will start training at their Cobham training facilities in the coming days, it seemingly yet to be determined whether Amougou will become a senior option before the end of the campaign.

Speaking to the club's official website, the starlet said: "I'm very happy. It's an honour for me to sign for such a big club like Chelsea.

"They believe in young players and the process they have in place to develop us is fantastic."

Earlier on Tuesday, it was alleged that Chelsea have already established a plan for Amougou for the next 18 months.

Will Amougou play this season?

Amougou has enjoyed a productive campaign with Saint-Etienne, making a total of nine starts and eight substitute outings in Ligue 1.

While Chelsea chiefs will be encouraged by that game time, there will seemingly be no rush to integrate Amougou into senior action just yet.

Nevertheless, with Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall the only fit central midfielders as it stands, a quick move up the pecking order cannot be ruled out.

In the short term, an appearance in the Under-21s is more realistic, particularly when Chelsea's Conference League schedule does not resume until March.
