West Ham United and Southampton have faced each other a total of 183 times across all competitions, with the Hammers leading the overall head-to-head record having posted 82 wins to the Saints' 52, while there have also been 50 draws played out between the two clubs.
Their very first meeting took place back in December 1899 when Southampton beat West Ham - known then as Thames Ironworks - by a 3-1 scoreline in the old Southern League.
Both teams regular faced each other in either the Southern League or Southern First Division in the early 20th century, and it was West Ham who dominated this fixture with 34 wins to Southampton's 14 across a 64-game period, boasting an impressive 34-game unbeaten run over the Saints between 1906 and 1914.
West Ham and Southampton have butted heads in the FA Cup on seven occasions in their history and five of those took place across a three-year period between January 1920 and March 1923. After winning 3-1 in a first round replay, the Hammers required two replays to beat the Saints 1-0 in a quarter-final tie after playing out back-to-back 1-1 draws.
There was little to separate West Ham and Southampton when they faced each other in Divisions One and Two, with the Hammers winning 24 games to the Saints' 20. However, Southampton did win 11 of their last 17 meetings in Division One.
In the Premier League era (since 1992-93), West Ham and Southampton have locked horns 44 times in the top flight, with the Hammers winning 21 games and the Saints winning 12.
Southampton failed to win any of their first seven PL games against West Ham before coming out on top in five of their next six up until the year 2000 when they then suffered four straight defeats by an aggregate score of 10-2.
The Saints picked up four points across home and away meetings with West Ham in the 2011-12 Championship season - one in which both teams secured promotion - but since then, the Saints have only won five of their last 24 Premier League encounters (D7 L12) with the Hammers, most recently drawing 1-1 at the London Stadium in April 2025.
