Tottenham injury, transfer news: Postecoglou comments on potential defensive deadline-day incomings with Dragusin set to see specialist

Tottenham Hotspur defender Radu Dragusin will see a specialist over the knee injury he sustained against Elfsborg, with time running out in the market to sign a replacement.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Radu Dragusin is set to see a specialist to assess the knee injury he sustained in the Europa League win over Elfsborg last week.

The Romanian international had to be replaced after awkwardly twisting his knee following a tussle for the ball with Elfsborg striker Jalal Abdullai.

After replacing the returning Micky van de Ven at half time in the win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Dragusin was forced off just 20 minutes later with the issue.

Dragusin has been the only senior central defender fit at Spurs for most of the season, with Van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies spending extended periods on the sidelines.

The defender will see a specialist today to discuss the best course of action, but initial fears are that he will miss the majority of the season.

Will Spurs sign another defender to compensate?

Spurs have already dipped into the transfer market to deal with their defensive crisis, completing the signing of Kevin Danso from Lens on loan with an obligation-to-buy in the summer.

Manager Ange Postecoglou still believes the club are "thin" in regards to option at centre-back though, and could try to sign another, especially following the news on Dragusin.

The Spurs boss revealed that it "doesn't look good" regarding Dragusin, and the Evening Standard believe he is set to miss most of the season with the knee injury.

Spurs won 2-0 at Brentford on Sunday, with Davies being partnered by Archie Gray in the heart of defence, as Postecoglou evidently wanted to keep Van de Ven fit and healthy ahead of their trip to Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday.

Postecoglou not desperate for a new defender

While the Spurs manager has been extremely unfortunate with injuries this season, and often bemoaned the lack of options at his disposal, Postecoglou is not content with just adding numbers to the squad for the sake of it.

Speaking in his post-match press conference on Sunday, Postecoglou said: "It's about seeing where we're at in terms of the fit of the player.

"It's not just about bringing another body in, I've said that all along," Postecoglou added.

The performances of young Gray has allowed Spurs to get by without panic buying in the market, and his manager was full of praise too.

"It goes under the radar, but the job Archie Gray's doing is just ridiculous. 18 years old, he's never played centre-back before, he's playing in the Premier League, and Europe midweek, every game. It's just incredible that he's churning it out."

Spurs's next encounter is that EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield, where Van de Ven should return, but Danso's fitness will be monitored after almost a month without any first-team action.
