Newcastle United are allegedly viewed as the frontrunners to sign a Ligue 1 striker this summer that has also been linked with Chelsea.

Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as the club who are showing the most interest in one of Strasbourg's star players.

Sitting in fifth position in the Premier League table with a game in hand on third-placed Manchester City, the Magpies are pushing for Champions League qualification.

However, as well as facing the prospect of having to fend off interest in their key men, Eddie Howe will be in the market for several fresh faces during the summer transfer window.

With Callum Wilson potentially departing St James' Park on a free transfer, fresh competition for Alexander Isak will be sought by the Englishman.

According to L'Equipe, the North-East outfit have identified Emanuel Emegha as a potential addition to their squad.

Newcastle targeting Emegha coup

Despite unrest among the fanbase over BlueCo's ownership of their club, Strasbourg have been one of the surprise packages in Ligue 1 this campaign.

Emegha has played a key role under Liam Rosenior this season, the forward contributing 13 goals from his 25 starts in France's top flight.

Having only cost in the region of £11m in 2023, the 22-year-old has substantially enhanced his reputation during his time at Stade de la Meinau.

The Netherlands Under-21 international seemingly now has admirers in Newcastle who will need to decide to what extent they wish to sign him.

Furthermore, Emegha would need to accept playing second fiddle to Isak, albeit in the knowledge that the Sweden international may eventually depart St James' Park.

Where do Chelsea stand?

Although Chelsea are currently not pushing to sign Emegha, it is claimed that they have suggested to the player that an eventual move to Stamford Bridge remains a possibility.

That has seemingly been done to ensure that Emegha remains at Strasbourg in the short term, although European qualification would also aid their efforts in achieving that.

With four matches remaining, Strasbourg are seventh in Ligue 1, holding a six-point advantage over eighth and trailing second spot by just the four points.
