Chesterfield see off York City

First-half goals by Eoin Doyle and Gary Roberts give Chesterfield a 2-0 away at York City in tonight's League Two clash at Bootham Crescent.

First-half goals by Eoin Doyle and Gary Roberts have given Chesterfield a 2-0 win away at York City in tonight's League Two clash at Bootham Crescent.

In the second minute of the game, Doyle was able to find space inside the York area, before firing home emphatically to give the visitors an early lead.

Just a few minutes later, Oliver Banks crossed for Roberts on the edge of the six yard box, the midfielder's subsequent effort forcing a point-blank save from Nick Pope.

The Derbyshire side continued to dominate, Roberts finding Doyle in space midway through the first half. The striker fired just wide of Pope's goal, but he had already been flagged offside.

With six minutes to go of the first half, Dan Gardner was able to launch a counter-attack following on from a Minstermen corner. The midfielder then found Roberts, who subsequently fired into the net.

Five minutes after the restart, Roberts was allowed to turn sharply on the edge of the area, before threading a pass through to Doyle. The striker had a shot, but it was smothered by Pope.

On the hour, both sides had penalty appeals turned down. First, Wes Fletcher fell in the Spireites' six-yard box, then Marc Richards appeared to be fouled in the York area. Neither was given.

With 10 minutes to go, Richards found space on the right wing. He cut inside onto his left foot before firing a powerful effort on goal, but Pope was able to make a save.
