Preview: Swansea City vs. Oxford United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Swansea City and Oxford United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Swansea City play host to Oxford United on Saturday afternoon looking for the win that may secure a top-10 finish in the Championship table.

Meanwhile, the visitors make the trip to South Wales in 17th position and safe from relegation after a terrific first campaign back in the second tier.

Alan Sheehan was appointed as the new Swansea head coach on a permanent basis on Wednesday, reward for his outstanding stint in interim charge.

A total of 23 points came from 12 matches in the second tier, ending any concerns over a relegation battle and leaving the Welsh outfit on the brink of the top 10.

Regardless of whether they achieve that target or not, Swansea now appear to be on an upward trajectory under someone who has been on the backroom staff of the previous two managers.

Although Swansea lost out by a 1-0 scoreline at Millwall last time out, they had previously put together a five-match winning streak, conceding just the one goal.

Despite Swansea prevailing from five of their last six games on familiar territory, they still only possess the 15th-best home record in the division.

While Oxford have won just four of their last 17 games in the Championship, it has prove enough to secure their status as a second-tier club for another 12 months.

Gary Rowett has delivered nine wins and seven draws from his 25 games in all competitions since his December arrival to keep the relegation favourites in the division.

Despite three of the four victories in question coming at the Kassam Stadium, Oxford have claimed four of their 14 points in away fixtures in their last two such encounters.

A 1-0 victory at Sheffield Wednesday was followed by a 1-1 draw at Cardiff City, a return that should give them confidence ahead of what may feel like a daunting trip to the Swansea City Stadium.

Team News

Swansea City's Zan Vipotnik on February 12, 2025© Imago

Despite Swansea suffering defeat at Millwall, Sheehan is unlikely to make many changes to his first XI for this fixture.

Zan Vipotnik is most likely to return down the centre of the attack, potentially at the expense of Liam Cullen.

Myles Peart-Harris, Josh Ginnelly and Kristian Pedersen all miss out through injury, while Harry Darling is also expected to remain sidelined.

Barring any fitness issues, Rowett may decide to retain the same Oxford starting lineup on the back of their victory over Sunderland.

Idris El Mizouni and Siriki Dembele are among those on the injury list, but Hidde ter Avest returned from a small layoff last time out.

Swansea City possible starting lineup:
Vigouroux; Key, Cabango, Delcroix, Tymon; Franco, Fulton; Ronald, O'Brien, Eom; Vipotnik

Oxford United possible starting lineup:
Cumming; Long, Helik, Nelson, Leigh; Vaulks, Brannagan; Placheta, Rodrigues, Goodrham; Harris

We say: Swansea City 2-1 Oxford United

With 14th position up for grabs, Oxford will be motivated to cap off an excellent campaign. However, with Sheehan motivated to go into next season on a high note, we are backing the home side to do enough to secure the three points.
