Championship transfers: Confirmed ins and outs for summer window 2025

Keep track of every Championship signing and departure during the 2025 summer transfer window with Sports Mole's comprehensive guide.

The summer friendly period has either commenced or is about to commence for all 24 Championship teams, some of whom are vying for automatic Premier League promotion, some of whom harbour hopes of a playoff push, and some of whom simply want to retain their second-tier status in 2025-26.

Heading into the second half of July, there have now been a total of 370 transfer transactions involving Championship clubs in the summer window - 215 departures and 115 arrivals - and the eight-figure fees are now coming thick and fast.

Recently-relegated Ipswich Town have turned to Ligue 1 in recent days, completing a £10m deal with Rennes for midfielder Azor Matusiwa, while also signing defender Cedric Kipre on loan from fellow French outfit Reims.

Meanwhile, Norwich City have pocketed £11.5m through the sale of attacker Borja Sainz to Portuguese giants Porto, while Derby County have been set back £6m by bringing striker Patrick Agyemang to the club from Charlotte.

Elsewhere, Millwall have poached up-and-coming left-back Zak Sturge from Chelsea's academy ranks, and all eyes are also waiting to see what other marquee business could be done by the powers-that-be at Wrexham.

BIRMINGHAM CITY

Back in the Championship after a brief absence from the second tier, Birmingham City took League One by storm last season and should immediately have one eye on a potential playoff push in the 2025-26 campaign.

The 2010-11 EFL Cup winners started off quickly, with two players whose loan deals from the 2024-25 season were converted into permanent switches.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted penned long-term deals at St Andrew's, while centre-back Phil Neumann arrived on a free transfer in July from German outfit Hannover 96 following a pre-contract agreement put together near the start of 2025.

Birmingham also banked £3m by selling 18-year-old Romelle Donovan to Brentford, and at the other end of the experience scale, veteran striker Lukas Jutkiewicz - double Donovan's age at 36 - hung up his boots. Since, then, Blues have secured several more eye-catching recruits.

Here, Sports Mole tracks all of Birmingham's summer transfer business, keeping you up to date with all of the club's incomings and outgoings.

BLACKBURN ROVERS

The agony of finishing seventh in the 2024-25 Championship season will not be lost on Blackburn Rovers fans or indeed players, who came so close yet to so far to breaching the playoff positions last term.

However, the 1994-95 Premier League champions' exile from the top flight will continue for another year, during which Valerien Ismael will lead a full campaign in charge at Ewood Park for the first time.

The Frenchman has previous when it comes to guiding teams into the top six, having unexpectedly taken Barnsley to the Championship playoffs in the 2020-21 campaign, and he has already bolstered Rovers' midfield ranks in the summer window.

Sidnei Tavares has been Blackburn's biggest acquisition so far, joining for a £2m fee from Portuguese outfit Moreirense, while former KV Kortrijk man Dion de Neve will offer an alternative option out wide following Dilan Markanday's free transfer to Chesterfield.

BRISTOL CITY

A promising 2024-25 campaign ended in disappointing fashion for Bristol City, as they were comfortably beaten 6-0 on aggregate in the Championship playoff semi-finals by Sheffield United.

The Robins have since said farewell to Liam Manning, who has moved to fellow Championship club Norwich City, and have appointed Gerhard Struber as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

Bristol is the largest city in England yet to host Premier League football, and Struber has arrived at Ashton Gate with high expectations, claiming that his new side are “ready for the next step”, although the 48-year-old has acknowledged that he is "not a dreamer".

CHARLTON ATHLETIC

After five years away, Charlton Athletic are back in the Championship, sealing their return for the 2025-26 season in dramatic fashion. Led by Nathan Jones, who delivered promotion at the first time of asking, the Addicks battled their way through the League One playoffs to complete a memorable campaign.

Charlton finished fourth on 85 points and edged past Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 over two legs in the semi-finals, before repeating that scoreline at Wembley to see off Leyton Orient and secure their place in the second tier.

With promotion secured, attention at The Valley has quickly turned to the challenge ahead. Jones is now hard at work shaping a squad capable of holding its own in the Championship and steering clear of an immediate drop back to League One.

COVENTRY CITY

Coventry City are once again nursing the pain of another heartbreaking Championship play-off exit. Last season saw the Sky Blues put together a determined campaign, racking up 69 points from 46 games to finish fifth, with 20 wins, nine draws and 17 defeats — only to see their Premier League dream slip away in the dying moments of a tense semi-final against Sunderland, losing 3-2 on aggregate.

However, there is a real sense of belief around the Coventry Building Society Arena. Frank Lampard, who arrived mid-season and quickly turned the team from relegation strugglers into serious promotion contenders, has brought fresh energy and purpose. With a full pre-season ahead and the summer window giving him a chance to put his stamp on the squad, Lampard will be quietly confident of guiding Coventry back into the top six — and this time, going all the way.

Ahead of the new season, Sports Mole tracks all of Coventry’s 2025 summer transfer business.

DERBY COUNTY

Derby County’s resolve was pushed to the limit during the 2024–2025 season. At one point, the Rams looked set for an immediate return to League One, but the arrival of John Eustace in February brought a much-needed lift.

The former Derby midfielder steadied things just in time, helping the team secure Championship safety by the narrowest of margins—surviving by a single point on the final day.

Now preparing for his first full season in charge, Eustace will be hoping to build on that great escape and avoid another scrap near the bottom, though much will depend on the backing he receives.

Derby have wasted little time getting to work in the transfer market, with four players already through the door. The new signings are expected to add valuable experience, not least 33-year-old Austrian midfielder Andreas Weimann, who returns for a second spell at Pride Park. He joins on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers and has signed a one-year deal, having previously played for the club between 2015 and 2018.

On the other side, several players have moved on following the end of their contracts, while a number of loan players have returned to their parent clubs.

Derby have four pre-season friendlies in the diary for July, with the team working towards their 2025-26 Championship opener, which comes against Stoke City on August 9.

The team's first home match of the new season will be against Coventry City on August 16, while they will also take on Bristol City and Ipswich Town in their opening month of the new campaign.

Derby have been absent from the top flight of English football since the 2007-08 campaign, and as mentioned, they have also spent time in League One of late.

The Rams will now be aiming to consolidate back in the second tier, with a push for the top half not impossible, but that will depend on how much more their squad can be boosted before the end of the transfer window.

There are expected to be further incomings before the deadline, while more players will also move on, as Eustace freshens his squad for what is shaping up to be an interesting season.

Here, Sports Mole tracks all of Derby's summer transfer business.

HULL CITY

The 2024–25 season proved to be a tough one for Hull City, who only just managed to avoid relegation from the Championship; they finished level on points with Luton Town but stayed up by virtue of goal difference.

Ruben Selles, who took over in December and helped lift the Tigers from the foot of the table to safety, was surprisingly dismissed at the end of the campaign; he has since been replaced by Sergej Jakirovic, who will now lead the team into the new season, which is shaping up to be an interesting one.

Hull had made a busy start to the summer, bringing in four new signings, including Colombian midfielder Gustavo Puerta on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen. Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi also arrived on a free transfer after leaving West Bromwich Albion. However, the rebuild under Jakirovic has already hit a major hurdle.

The club have been placed under a transfer embargo for three windows by the Football League, following concerns over their financial stability. The ban, which prevents them from paying fees for new signings, will run from 4 July until the end of the summer 2026 window.

With spending restrictions now in place, Hull will have to tread carefully—striking a delicate balance between following the rules and assembling a competitive squad, which is no easy task when quality rarely comes without a price.

Hull are working towards the start of their 2025-26 Championship campaign, which will see them head to Coventry City on August 9.

The Tigers will then face Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City before the end of the month, with September then beginning with a trip to Wales to tackle Swansea City.

Hull have spent each of the last four seasons in the Championship, with their last campaign in the third tier coming in 2020-21.

The Tigers have been absent from the Premier League since the 2016-17 season, meanwhile, and it will be incredibly difficult for them to challenge for a return to the top flight for next term considering the restrictions that are in place.

That said, there are some very talented players at the club, and the team will certainly be aiming to push higher up the table in 2025-26, which is now just around the corner.

Here, Sports Mole tracks all of Hull's summer transfer business.

LEICESTER CITY

Leicester City fans endured a dire Premier League campaign in 2024-25, and they will be hoping that their summer business can propel them to an instant promotion from the Championship next term.

Adding to fans woes was the fact that legendary striker Jamie Vardy called time on his 13-year stint at the King Power Stadium, though he did fire in an undeniably impressive 200 goals across 500 appearances for the Foxes.

Before embarking on their top-flight season, second-tier winning manager Enzo Maresca departed for Chelsea and was replaced by former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

However, with the club in disarray amidst talk of a falling out between the players and the head-coach, Cooper was sacked and Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge, only to lead the team to relegation while also becoming the first side in the history of English football's top four tiers to lose eight consecutive home league games without scoring.

Van Nistelrooy himself has since been deposed, with the Foxes appointing Marti Cifuentes - who has enjoyed an impressive two years at Queens Park Rangers in the Championship - as his successor.

Here, Sports Mole follows all of Leicester's incomings and outgoings during the summer 2025 transfer window.

MIDDLESBROUGH

For the second straight season, Middlesbrough failed to reach the playoffs, finishing in 10th place during their disappointing 2024-25 Championship campaign.

Despite his impressive start and promise as a young manager, head-coach Michael Carrick was dismissed in early June after two-and-a-half years at the Riverside Stadium, and has since been replaced by Rob Edwards.

Having led Luton Town to Premier League promotion in the 2022–23 season, the 42-year-old will be eager to replicate that success with his new club. Luton’s subsequent drop to League One only underscores the remarkable job he did during his time at Kenilworth Road.

However, much of Middlesbrough’s ability to challenge established playoff contenders and recently relegated Premier League sides will depend on the scale and quality of their summer recruitment. With Edwards’ track record and the potential funds generated from player sales, he is expected to receive strong backing in the transfer market to build a competitive squad.

Here, Sports Mole follows all of Middlesbrough's incomings and exits during the summer 2025 transfer window.

MILLWALL

Millwall agonisingly missed out on a place in the Championship playoffs last season, as the Lions finished eighth and just two points adrift of the top eight.

Looking ahead to the 2025–26 campaign, Millwall will be determined to mount a stronger push for Premier League promotion. As a result, the club is expected to be active in the transfer market, with further signings anticipated to strengthen the squad and support their ambitions.

The Lions have already seen a number of players depart the club since the end of last campaign, including forward Zian Flemming, who has made his loan move to Burnley a permanent transfer.

Millwall could see more players depart in the coming weeks, with the likes of Japhet Tanganga attracting interest. However, manager Alex Neil will be aiming to keep hold of his key players while reinforcing crucial positions to build on the progress made since his appointment in December 2024.

The club has already made moves in the market, securing Josh Coburn on a permanent deal from Middlesbrough for a reported £5 million following his loan spell last season. In addition, goalkeeper Max Crocombe has joined on a free transfer after leaving Burton Albion.

NORWICH CITY

Missing out on a shot at promotion once again, Norwich City finished 13th in the 2024-25 Championship season, and as they hope to build on their 57-point tally, they have been active in the transfer market.

With Liam Manning permanently installed in the dug out, the canaries are desperate to re-affirm their status as regular challengers in the second tier, and have already made seven additions to bolster the squad.

That being said, the club will need to hold onto the likes of Borja Sainz and Joshua Sargent amidst reported interest from Premier League sides if they are to make a run at the playoffs next term.

Additionally, with less than a month until the 2025-26 campaign kicks off, the boss will be keen to have as much time as possible to work with any remaining signings that make the switch to Carrow Road in order to give his group the best chance of success.

OXFORD UNITED

Oxford United were embroiled in a relegation battle for much of last term, and they will be hoping that their summer business can help them avoid another scrap in 2025-26.

After their promotion to the Championship from the third tier in 2023-24, the U's struggled under Des Buckingham and could have returned to League One if not for current boss Gary Rowett.

The former Millwall and Stoke City manager took charge in December 2024 and impressively went unbeaten across his first 9 games in the dugout, winning five times in the process.

A 2-0 victory over Sunderland in late April saw the club secure their status in the division with two matches to play, and they went on to finish 17th, four points and five places clear of the drop zone.

Ahead of next season, a number of players have departed the club upon the expiry of their contracts, while Ruben Rodrigues and Idris El Mizouni have left for undisclosed fees.

Rowett will now be keen to find adequate replacements and improvements as soon as possible to have as close to a complete pre-season as possible with his full squad, with ambitions of climbing further away from the Championship relegation zone next term.

Here, Sports Mole follows all of Oxford United's incomings and exits during the summer 2025 transfer window.

PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth supporters went into the 2024-25 Championship campaign with low expectations after their promotion, but alarm bells were ringing when they failed to win a single game before matchday 10.

However, Pompey stuck by head coach John Mousinho and were rewarded for their faith when he guided the team to safety, securing another season in the division with a 16th-placed finish.

This time around, the south coast side will be hoping to build on their success and climb up the standings, but they will need to equip the manager with a bolstered squad to do so.

To date, Portsmouth have welcomed just one new face to Fratton park, signing 21-year-old winger Adrian Segecic from Australia's Sydney FC.

As the start of the 2025-26 league season approaches, recruiting for midfield areas is sure to be one of Pompey's top priorities, and they may turn to the loan market to fill gaps in the lineup as they have done to great effect in the past.

PRESTON NORTH END

After surviving by the skin of their teeth on the final day of the 2024-25 Championship season, Preston North End will be hoping to regain their stability in the second tier, and bolstering their squad will be key to achieving that.

PNE have already welcomed up to six players, but they have also lost six players, leaving room for more to done in the transfer market.

With just one game under their belt last term - a 2-0 home loss against Sheffield United - former manager Ryan Lowe unexpectedly parted ways with the club having decided with his family that he needed a break.

The Lilywhites appointed former Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom on August 20 when they were 23rd in the table after losing their first two matches, and with the team on a run of seven successive league defeats without scoring, the new head coach had his work cut out for him.

PNE eventually finished 20th with a total of 50 points, just one above 22nd-placed Luton Town, and if they are to get back on track given that they had ended the three previous campaigns in 13th, 12th and 10th, they will need to bolster their squad in the market.

Here, Sports Mole follows all of Preston's arrivals and exits during the 2025 summer transfer window.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS

For the 11th season running, Queens Park Rangers will endeavour to end their stint in the Championship and return to the promised land of the Premier League, this time with another new face at the helm.

The Hoops have welcomed the highly-rated Frenchman Julien Stephan to Loftus Road following his stints with Rennes and Strasbourg in his homeland; he led the former club to the Champions League and a Coupe de France in his first spell in charge.

Stephan's ambitions with QPR are of course a lot more modest for the time being, although as of July 11, the Hoops' biggest arrival of the summer so far has come from the French top flight.

The capital outfit splashed out £2.5m to bring Karamoko Dembele to the club from former Champions League competitors Brest, but they are yet to boost their own coffers through a summer sale, only seeing a handful of players depart at the end of their contracts and two on loan.

Here, Sports Mole follows every arrival and exit during QPR's 2025 summer transfer window.

SHEFFIELD UNITED

Still reeling from a Wembley gut punch against Premier League-bound Sunderland in the 2024-25 Championship playoff final, Sheffield United will soon commence their latest bid to return to the promised land of English football.

The Blades must now contend with fellow fallen foes Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town in 2025-26, although they should still be considered one of the top contenders to book their spot in the top flight for the 2026-27 campaign.

However, they will do so without long-serving head coach Chris Wilder, whose position has been succeeded by Ruben Selles, who has overseen a remarkably quiet start to the summer transfer window so far.

Apart from a few youth prospects moving on to other clubs and Vinicius Souza leaving for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in a £13m deal, it has been a relatively subdued summer for the Blades.

Joining at Bramall Lane are 20-year-old forward Ehije Success Ukaki, signing from Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv in a deal worth approximately £500,000, while Tyler Bindon has arrived temporarily from Premier League side Nottingham Forest for the 25-26 season.

Here, Sports Mole tracks all of Sheffield United's arrivals and exits during the 2025 summer transfer window.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Sheffield Wednesday head into the 2025-26 Championship season under a cloud of uncertainty, facing one of the most turbulent periods in their recent history. The club has been hit with a three-window transfer fee ban by the EFL, running until January 2027, after repeated breaches of regulations, including failure to pay player wages in three of the past four months.

A points deduction to start the season is also expected, while manager Danny Röhl’s future hangs in the balance. Key players like Djeidi Gassama are being linked with moves away, and although owner Dejphon Chansiri is seeking fresh investment, he is reportedly turning down offers due to an unrealistic asking price.

With several players departing on free transfers and no new signings brought in, the Owls are left relying on their academy to plug the gaps. Youngsters Ernie Weaver, Logan Stretch, Joe Emery, George Brown and Rio Shipston have all signed pro terms ahead of a daunting opening fixture away to Leicester City on August 9.

Here, Sports Mole follows all of Sheffield Wednesday's transfer incomings and outgoings this window.

SOUTHAMPTON

Yet another new era is upon Southampton supporters, who witnessed Russell Martin and Simon Rusk join forces to just about prevent the Saints from setting the most shameful Premier League record in the 2024-25 campaign.

For a long while, the South Coast side were at a serious risk of becoming the worst team to ever grace the competition, only to eventually overtake Derby County's record-low points total of 11 from the 2007-08 season.

With pre-season about to get underway, new manager Will Still - formerly of Lens and Reims in Ligue 1 - has been getting to know his group of players, one that has only welcomed the one new face so far in Joshua Quarshie.

It has been anything but quiet on the outgoings front, though, as the Saints garnered a healthy £18m sum by selling Kamaldeen Sulemana to Atalanta BC, allowed Paul Onuachu to join Trabzonspor, saw Kyle Walker-Peters leave at the end of his contract and bade farewell to the retiring Adam Lallana.

Southampton will naturally be among the favourites to win the Championship next season, with Ipswich Town and Leicester City also looking for an immediate return to the top flight.

There will be more incomings before the transfer window closes, while there will also be further exits, as Still looks to put together a squad capable of challenging for promotion back to the Premier League.

Southampton's 2025-26 Championship campaign will begin with a clash against Wrexham on August 9, and that is shaping up to be a blockbuster clash considering what the Welsh side have achieved of late.

The Saints will then take on Ipswich, Stoke City and Watford before the end of the month; their first match in September, meanwhile, is the small matter of a clash with bitter rivals Portsmouth.

The new season is now just around the corner, and it will be fascinating to see what Southampton can achieve during the 2025-26 campaign.

Here, Sports Mole tracks all of Southampton's summer transfer business for the 2025 window.

STOKE CITY

Stoke City narrowly survived their tumultuous Championship campaign in 2024-25, and fans were faced with a rollercoaster of emotions when the club sacked manager Steven Schumacher just five games into the season before also parting ways with his replacement Narcis Pelach in December, appointing current boss Mark Robins on New Years Day.

Robins would go on to steer the Potters out of the relegation zone, though the battle persisted all the way to matchday 46, when they ended the season 18th in the Championship table with 51 points, just two above 22nd-placed Luton Town, who were demoted to League One.

With the aim of achieving stability in the second tier in 2025-26 - looking to climb away from the drop zone - Stoke have to be active in the transfer window in order to equip the head-coach that saved them from the drop with a squad capable of competing week-in week-out at a much higher level.

Here, Sports Mole follows all of Stoke's summer transfer incomings and outgoings.

SWANSEA CITY

Following an unspectacular mid-table finish in the 2024-25 Championship season, Swansea City have not been shy to get the chequebook out in their pursuit of a coveted playoff place in 2025-26.

The Swans have spent a significant amount on improving their forward line, splashing out £5m on 23-year-old attacker Zeidane Inoussa from Swedish outfit BK Hacken.

Inoussa's tally of 11 goals in the 2024-25 season spells optimism for a Swansea side who only struck 51 times across 46 Championship matches last term, the second-fewest of any top-half team after Millwall's 47.

Twenty-year-old striker Bobby Wales - a six-figure signing from Kilmarnock - may also be able to help in that regard, but the Swans have bid an emotional farewell to Joe Allen, who has decided to hang up his boots at the age of 35.

Here, Sports Mole tracks Swansea's summer transfer business, where you can keep up to date with all of the club's incomings and outgoings.

WATFORD

Watford's 2024–25 season began with promise but ended in frustration, as the team fell away from the play-off race after managing just two wins in their final 12 Championship fixtures.

The Hornets eventually settled for a 14th-place finish, collecting 57 points from 46 games—11 adrift of the top six. That disappointing run prompted the club to part company with head coach Tom Cleverley.

Uruguayan manager Paulo Pezzolano has taken the reins at Vicarage Road, becoming the latest head coach under the ownership of Gino Pozzo, whose tenure has been marked by a high turnover of managers.

Watford have already begun reshaping their squad, bringing in three players on free transfers and securing a loan move for James Abankwah from sister club Udinese. With promotion as the clear objective, further additions are expected as Pezzolano works to assemble a side capable of challenging at the top end of the Championship.

The Hornets are also close to securing the signing of 19-year-old French-born forward Othmane Maamma, who is set to leave Montpellier following their relegation to Ligue 2. The promising attacker has caught the eye through his performances with the Morocco under-20 national team, and Watford are moving quickly to finalise a deal as they aim to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.

Ahead of the new season, Sports Mole tracks all of Watford's 2025 summer transfer business.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION

West Brom endured a turbulent campaign last season, with a series of managerial changes disrupting their rhythm. Even so, the Baggies managed a respectable ninth-place finish, ending up just four points short of the play-offs.

Ryan Mason has since taken charge at The Hawthorns, choosing to leave his role on Tottenham’s coaching staff to begin his first full-time job in senior management.

With several players having left at the end of last season, Mason will be eager to reshape the squad in his image ahead of the new campaign. His first signing came in the form of Nat Phillips, who joined from Premier League champions Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

West Brom have also landed the services of Norwegian striker Aune Heggebo from SK Brann as they look to provide support and competition for Josh Maja and Daryl Dike up front.

The Baggies will hope those two signings mark the start of a productive summer window, as they aim to assemble a squad capable of finally returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2020–21.

That said, Sports Mole brings you the latest on players leaving the Hawthorns and those heading in the opposite direction this summer.

WREXHAM

Following Wrexham's remarkable promotion from League One in 2024-25, the Welsh club will be competing in the second tier of the football pyramid for just the second time in their history, and for the first time since the 1970s.

The club have been on an upward trajectory ever since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took ownership of the team in 2020, with the side lingering in the fifth tier.

After ending their long stay in the National League, Wrexham required just one season to get out of League Two, before they repeated the feat in the third tier last season.

The Red Dragons collected 92 points from 46 matches to finish in second place and clinch a third consecutive promotion, leaving them just one step away from the promised land of the Premier League.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has welcomed two new faces to the club this summer, following the additions of goalkeeper Danny Ward and striker Ryan Hardie

Parkinson will be keen to make several more additions before the September 1 deadline, and ideally, before his team kick off the new season against Southampton on August 9.

Here, Sports Mole tracks all of Wrexham's summer transfer business.
