Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Brasileiro clash between Vitoria and Sport Recife, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two teams currently languishing in the lower echelons of the Brasileiro table face off in round 16 of the 2025 season as Vitoria welcome Sport Recife to the Barradao on Thursday evening.

Fresh off the back of ending an eight-game winless streak, the hosts will go in search of consecutive league wins for the first time this term, while the away side still await their first league victory of the campaign.

Match preview

Navigating between domestic and continental duties at the start of the season, Vitoria suffered on both fronts, winning just two of their first 10 Brasileiro outings, while also crashing out of the Copa Sudamericana group stages.

Following the conclusion of their continental journey with a 1-0 defeat against Universidad Catolica, Fabio Carille's men went on a fresh five-game winless run during which they were also knocked out of Copa do Nordeste by lower league outfit Confianca.

However, Leao da Barra will be hopeful of an upturn in form after securing a much-needed return to winning ways by beating RB Bragantino 1-0 on Sunday courtesy of Renato Kayzer's early strike.

With no other commitment from now until the end of the season, Vitoria's full focus will be on ensuring their top-flight safety, and the team from Salvador have some work to do as they sit just a point ahead of the drop zone despite having played an extra game.

Their next assignment sees them face off against an opposing outfit who have lost each of the most recent three meetings and are without a win in the last five dating back to 2020, which undoubtedly makes for good reading.

With games against two of the current top-seven sides to follow Thursday's assignment, Vitoria will need to be on song over the next fortnight to avoid losing ground in the battle for survival.

Sport Recife have had arguably the worst start to a Brasileiro campaign as they still await their first win near the midway point of proceedings.

Five defeats and two draws from the opening seven matches saw Pepa relieved of his duties as Recife manager, after which Antonio Oliveira took over temporarily before the appointment of Daniel Paulista.

Between Oliveira and Paulista, both men have managed just one point from an available 24 off the back of Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Botafogo - a 10th loss of the campaign in 13 outings.

This has left Leao da Ilha rock bottom in the standings with three points, 11 adrift of safety already.

Recife's tally of 21 goals conceded is the second-most in the division and needs some improvement, but it is their work at the other end which has been the biggest Achilles' heel so far.

Thursday's visitors have only scored five times, at least five fewer than any other team, and their attacking output will need to significantly skyrocket if they are to somehow turn things around.

We say: Vitoria 1-0 Sport Recife

Both teams are currently in the bottom three for goals scored in the division, so we are expecting a low-scoring affair here. That said, we are backing Vitoria to make home advantage count and secure maximum points at the sound of the final whistle.
