Liverpool match 129-year goalscoring record in Premier League title-clinching Tottenham thrashing

Liverpool equal a club goalscoring record by putting five goals past Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday's Premier League title-clinching victory.

Liverpool equalled a club goalscoring record that had stood alone for 129 years in their 5-1 crushing of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds arrived in front of a fervent Merseyside crowd knowing that a point would be good enough for Premier League glory, having sat 12 points above Arsenal with just four games left to play.

Ange Postecoglou's men briefly threatened to rip up the script at Anfield, as ex-Reds striker Dominic Solanke headed home a James Maddison corner in front of a shell-shocked Kop.

However, Luis Diaz - who had been brushed aside by Solanke for the game's opening goal - made amends with the equaliser just a few minutes later, before Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo completed the first-half turnaround.

A customary Mohamed Salah goal and Destiny Udogie own goal ultimately saw Liverpool breeze to the 2024-25 Premier League crown, as well as maintaining their astonishing scoring record vs. Spurs.

The Premier League champions have scored a remarkable 15 goals against Tottenham across their four meetings this season, their joint-most against a single opponent in their history.

Only once before have Liverpool ever notched as many as 15 goals against one team in a single campaign, doing so against Rotherham Town in the 1895-96 season.

The Reds competed in the Second Division that year and obliterated Rotherham 5-0 away and 10-1 at Anfield, before earning promotion to the top tier of English football as league champions.

Over a century later, Liverpool's 5-1 beating of Spurs on Sunday came after a 4-1 aggregate win in the EFL Cup semi-finals, and enthralling 6-3 Premier League success at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December.

What other feats did Liverpool achieve against Tottenham?

Amid the red flares and powerful renditions of You'll Never Walk Alone, it is easy for statistics to get lost in the title bedlam, but there were a few noteworthy feats worth mentioning.

By contributing to Liverpool's success on the day, Salah moved above Sergio Aguero into fifth place in the all-time Premier League charts and is now the most prolific foreign player the competition has ever seen.

The Egypt international is now on a staggering 185 goals in England's top flight and boasts 16 goals against Tottenham alone, now making them his joint-favourite opponent with Manchester United.

At full time, Arne Slot and Virgil van Dijk also became the first Dutch coach and captain respectively to win the Premier League, while the former joined an exclusive club of triumphant bosses.

Only four managers had ever won the title in their first seasons in the competition - Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho, Manuel Pellegrini and Carlo Ancelotti - but above all, Liverpool can proudly share an identical number of English top-flight crowns to Manchester United as they parade around number 20.
