Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has criticised the decision to send off Evanilson in the 1-1 home draw with Manchester United.

The Cherries appeared to be on course to claim all three points after Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring in the first half.

However, Bournemouth's task became significantly tougher when Evanilson was given his marching orders in the 70th minute.

Evanilson was initially awarded a yellow card for his tackle on Noussair Mazraoui, before it was controversially upgraded to a red following a VAR review despite replays appearing to show the striker slip as he made the challenge.

After being left a man light, the Cherries were unable to hold out for the win, as Rasmus Hojlund netted a 96th-minute equaliser to ensure that the spoils were shared at the Vitality Stadium.

Iraola slams Evanilson red card decision

Speaking after the game, Iraola criticised the decision to dismiss the Brazilian striker, insisting that it was clear he had slipped and that the club would appeal the decision.

"It's common sense. Everyone who has played football understands - he slips," the Bournemouth boss told reporters.

"He doesn't catch him with the leg that goes high, and the consequence is a red card. It is another three games without playing. The repercussions for us are huge.

"Of course, we are going to appeal. It is common sense. In the first half, Evanilson gets a kick in the chest by Casemiro. I don't think you should have a red card for this, but VAR cuts the worst angle, the worst frame."

Iraola comments on European hopes

The draw has left Bournemouth in 10th place in the Premier League table, with seven points separating them from the top seven.

Bournemouth are only one point adrift of eighth position, which could potentially become a European spot before the end of the season.

Iraola has admitted that Bournemouth's quest to secure European football has become tougher following the results over the weekend.

"We are in a worse position than at the start of the weekend, but we still have four games to play," Iraola said.

"They are difficult games but we are in the fight. It is difficult to look in a positive way at the moment, we need a few hours."

Bournemouth will be hoping to claim all three points when they travel to the Emirates Stadium for Saturday's clash with second-placed Arsenal.
