Jordan Pickford makes a string of saves as Everton hold Liverpool to a 0-0 draw in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, a match which also saw the woodwork hit four times.

Everton and Liverpool played out a goalless draw in the first Merseyside derby of the season as Jordan Pickford made a string of saves to keep Jurgen Klopp's side at bay at Goodison Park.

The woodwork also played a key part in the stalemate as Everton struck it once and Liverpool were denied by it three times - although two of those came via smart stops from the Toffees goalkeeper.

The hosts also had a goal disallowed in an entertaining and at times end-to-end derby, but ultimately neither team could break the deadlock and both were forced to settle for a scoreline which does not do much for either of them.

Everton remain winless after six games of the season and have now drawn each of their last four, while Liverpool have now dropped points in four of their opening six Premier League games.

Both sides hit the woodwork in an energetic and full-blooded first half, with Everton's Tom Davies the first to do so when his outside-of-the-boot curler beat Alisson Becker but hit the post.

The hosts were then saved by the frame of the goal - and keeper Pickford - themselves twice in a matter of seconds at the end of the first half.

First, Darwin Nunez - straight back into the starting lineup upon his return from suspension - chested the ball down and unleashed a powerful half-volley which Pickford brilliantly turned onto the crossbar, before Luis Diaz picked up the loose ball, cut inside and hammered a shot of his own against the inside of the post.

Having ended the first half on top, Liverpool picked up where they left off at the start of the second with big chances for Kostas Tsimikas and Nunez, the latter of whom fired his volley from the edge of the box straight at Pickford.

The Everton keeper continued to frustrate Liverpool's attack and made three important saves in the space of a minute shortly after the hour mark, denying Roberto Firmino twice before also keeping out Fabinho as the visitors looked to turn the screw.

However, it was Everton who wrestled back momentum soon afterwards as Neal Maupay was denied a debut goal by Alisson before former Liverpool man Conor Coady thought he had given his new club the lead.

The summer signing turned fellow new arrival Maupay's cross-shot home from close range with just over 20 minutes remaining, but VAR ruled the goal out due to a marginal offside.

Alisson was called into action again to turn a deflected Dwight McNeil effort over the crossbar, but it was his opposite number at the other end who had the biggest say in the result as he once again denied Firmino late on.

The best was arguably yet to come from the England number one too as he got down quickly to turn Mohamed Salah's strike against the foot of the post in the 95th minute, denying Liverpool another dramatic late winner and earning Everton their first clean sheet of the season, as well as a point, in the process.

The result leaves Everton still searching for their first derby win on home soil since 2010, although nine of the 12 meetings since have ended all square.

Indeed, no fixture in Premier League history has now finished level more often than the Merseyside derby, while Liverpool have failed to win any of their opening three away league games in a season for the first time in more than a decade.
