Brighton vs. Fulham: Fabian Hurzeler's side could equal 94-year English record in Premier League clash

Brighton & Hove Albion could equal a 94-year English football record if they beat Fulham in Saturday's Premier League contest at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton & Hove Albion could equal a 94-year English football record if they beat Fulham in Saturday's Premier League contest at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls are one of several teams in a hotly-contest battle to secure European football for next season; they currently sit eighth in the table, one point behind Fulham in ninth and just four points behind the top four.

Fabian Hurzeler's men began the month of February in disappointing fashion as they suffered a painful 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest - the club's heaviest league loss for 67 years.

However, since then, Brighton have responded well and have put together a five-game winning streak in all competitions, most recently beating Newcastle United 2-1 after extra time in the FA Cup fifth round last weekend.

The Seagulls' winning run includes three successes in the Premier League against Chelsea, Southampton and Bournemouth, scoring nine goals and conceding only one in the process.

If Brighton beat Fulham on Saturday, not only would it represent their first-ever Premier League victory over the Cottagers at the 10th time of asking - having previously drawn four and lost five of their last nine meetings - they will also equal an English record that has stood for almost a century.

Brighton out to match 94-year Grimsby record in Fulham clash

Indeed, victory over Fulham would see Brighton become the first team in English top-flight history to win four games in a row immediately after a defeat by seven or more goals since Grimsby Town, who lost 9-1 to Arsenal back in January 1931 before winning their next four matches.

Hurzeler is aware of the challenges that his Brighton side could face this weekend against a Fulham outfit who have had an "unbelievable season" in the eyes of the young German coach.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Hurzeler said: "It's very important that we focus on our journey, and that we really believe in it.

"Yesterday I received a picture, an image from a mountain, and on a mountain you have always new peaks you have to climb, and that's the goal for us, we have to climb new peaks, we have to do it as individual persons and we have to do it as a group. That's the main thing for tomorrow because Fulham will be a big challenge.

"They have played an unbelievable season. They play very compact as a team but they have individual quality, so we have to raise our standards.

"We have to be better than we were in the last weeks, because if you think it will continue like this just by saying it will continue like this, you think wrong."

Meanwhile Hurzeler has confirmed that Kaoru Mitoma is fit and available for selection after coming off with cramp last time out, while Matt O'Riley (knee) will be assessed and captain Lewis Dunk (rib) remains out but is closing in on a return.
