Preview: St Louis City vs Los Angeles Galaxy - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Major League Soccer clash between St Louis City and Los Angeles Galaxy, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

In a battle between the bottom two teams in the MLS Western Conference, St Louis City host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday at Energizer Park.

Last weekend, St Louis dropped to 14th in the West with a 2-1 defeat versus the Portland Timbers, putting them seven points ahead of LA who won 2-0 the last time out against Real Salt Lake.

Leaving points on the table has been a common theme for St Louis this season, and that was the case last weekend against the Timbers.

That defeat was the fifth time in the 2025 regular season that they had drawn first blood and failed to win, with this side dropping 13 points as a result.

Nine of their 14 points accumulated so far this year occurred at Energizer Park, including the last time out in David Critchley’s first match in charge.

On Saturday they have a chance to claim consecutive home triumphs in this competition for the first time since winning their final two league contests a year ago.

St Louis City have earned at least a point in 11 straight league contests when netting multiple times, doing so on four occasions this year.

Saturday will mark their sixth all-time meeting versus the Galaxy, and St Louis are undefeated against them, winning this exact fixture last year 2-1.

That elusive first victory that seemed like it would never come finally did for the Los Angeles Galaxy in their previous domestic affair.

In the process, the reigning MLS Cup champions picked up their first regular-season clean sheet since August of last year (2-0 over Atlanta United).

Greg Vanney’s men have a long way to go to try and get back to post-season, currently 15 points below the Western Conference playoff line.

The next step for this team will be winning a match away from home, with LA losing their last six regular-season affairs as the visiting team.

To this stage of the campaign, the Galaxy have failed to win three of their four matches in this competition when drawing first blood, dropping eight points in the process.

They have not won a regular season away match versus a Western Conference opponent since October 2024 (3-1 triumph at the Colorado Rapids).

Team News

St Louis City goalkeeper Roman Burki pictured on July 27, 2023

In their defeat to the Timbers, St Louis were minus Rasmus Alm due to a sore hip and Joakim Nilsson was sidelined because of a knee injury.

Akil Watts put St Louis in front early in the second half with his first of the MLS campaign the last time out, though that advantage lasted a mere five minutes.

On the Galaxy side, Marco Reus missed their match against RSL with a hamstring strain and Riqui Puig was out again as he continues to recover from a cruciate ligament tear.

Lucas Sanabria and Joseph Paintsill scored the goals that lifted them to victory the last time out, while Novak Micovia made four stops to collect a clean sheet.

St Louis City possible starting lineup:

Burki; Totland, Kessler, Hiebert, Reid; Watts, Girdwood-Reich; Becher, Hartel, Pompeu; Klauss

Los Angeles Galaxy possible starting lineup:

Micovic; Yamane, Zanka, Yoshida, Nelson; Sanabria, Cerrillo; Pec, Fagundez, Paintsil; Ramirez

We say: St Louis City 1-2 Los Angeles Galaxy

The Galaxy have a long way to go to turn this season around, but their previous match should give them plenty of confidence going against a side lacking a lot of that right now, especially in the attacking third.
