Since returning to the Scottish Championship as Scottish League One champions in 2020-21, Partick Thistle have consistently battled for a promotion to the top flight in the subsequent four years.

The Jags finished fourth in 2021-22, fourth in 2022-23, third in 2023-24 and fourth in 2024-25, but were ultimately unable to secure their Scottish Premiership place after being defeated in the promotion playoffs.

Mark Wilson will be aiming to finally bridge the gap to promotion in 2025-26, and a strong Scottish League Cup group stage could prove to be a strong foundation to build from. 

Partick Thistle have certainly achieved that thus far, defeating Edinburgh City (4-1) and Stranraer (2-0), leaving them top of the group with six points from two fixtures. 

Ahead of their toughest matchup with Ross County in the final group game, Partick Thistle will be looking to maintain their winning momentum with a victory over Queen of the South. 

QotS enjoyed an encouraging 2024-25 campaign as they finished third in Scottish League One, eventually being denied promotion to the Championship by a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Cove Rangers in the promotion playoff semi-finals.

Peter Murphy, in charge since May 2024, will be looking to lead the Doonhamers back to the Championship for the first time since their relegation in 2021-22 this season. 

They started the competitive campaign with a 4-0 victory over Edinburgh City, followed by Queen of the South being narrowly defeated 1-0 by Ross County. 

Those results leave the side sitting third in the Group B table with three points from two fixtures, meaning a win could take them to the top of the standings depending on results elsewhere. 

Partick Thistle and Queen of the South have shared the spoils in their recent meetings, as Tuesday's hosts have won two, drawn one and lost two in their last five encounters.

Team News

As Partick Thistle have won each of their opening two Scottish League Cup fixtures, Wilson may decide to name a largely unchanged starting team on Tuesday. 

Luke Chalmers has enjoyed a particularly productive start in Group B, as the attacking midfielder has scored two and assisted one in his two appearances, and he is expected to play a key role once again here.

As for Queen of the South, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Ross County last time out, a similar team may be named on Tuesday after an encouraging performance against a Scottish Premiership side.

As a result, Kai Kennedy, Kurtis Guthrie and Liam Smith are likely to start in attack, while Reece Lyon - who scored a hattrick in their opening Scottish League Cup match - should feature in midfield.
