Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Champions League clash between Lech Poznan and Breidablik, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Lech Poznan will hope to get the better of visitors Breidablik on Tuesday at Enea Stadion in the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifying tie.

The home side ended 2024-25 as champions of the Polish top flight and were subsequently placed into the second qualifying round, while their Icelandic opponents beat Egnatia 5-1 on aggregate in the prior round.

Match preview

While the hosts are champions of Poland, they have begun their title defence poorly, losing their opening league game 4-1 against Cracovia on July 18.

The defeat was preceded by a 2-1 loss against Legia Warsaw in the Polish Super Cup final five days prior, a clash in which they produced just one open-play shot on target in the second half.

Lech Poznan scored 68 times and conceded on 31 occasions in the league last term, records which significantly improved upon their returns in 2023-24 given they scored just 47 goals and conceded 41 times in that campaign.

Manager Niels Frederiksen’s side have only once participated in the Champions League qualifiers in the past seven seasons, with the team eliminated 5-2 on aggregate by Qarabag in the first round of qualifying in 2022-23.

When including friendly matches, Kolejorz have lost three consecutive games, but they have triumphed in six of their last seven competitive home outings.

Opponents Breidablik are currently second in the Icelandic top flight with 30 points, though they only trail league-leaders Vikingur Reykjavik on goal difference, and the two sides are almost certain to battle for the title in their playoff group once the regular season ends.

The visitors ended 2024 as domestic champions and were entered into the Champions League qualifiers, but they have only successfully advanced past the qualifying stages of any European tournament once in 12 attempts.

Boss Halldor Arnason will be pleased that his side have kept two clean sheets in their two most recent fixtures, with his players finding the back of the net on six occasions in that time.

It should be noted that while Blikar have triumphed in their last two matches, they lost one and drew two of their previous four in all competitions.

Breidablik’s recent record on the road has been poor, with the club suffering three defeats in their past five away trips, including in their last two away from home.

Team News

Lech Poznan players celebrate after scoring against Cracovia, on July 18, 2025

With Lech Poznan forwards Ali Gholizadeh, Patrik Walemark and Daniel Hakans ruled out, expect Mikael Ishak and Filip Jagiello to feature up front.

Joel Pereira, Gisli Thordarson and Antoni Kozubal could start in midfield given Bartlomiej Baranski and Radoslaw Murawski are injured.

Boss Frederiksen has no absentee concerns in central defence, meaning he can select regulars Alex Douglas, Antonio Milic and Michal Gurgul.

As for Breidablik, they may station centre-backs Viktor Orn Margeirsson and Asgeir Orrason ahead of goalkeeper Anton Ari Einarsson.

Attackers Viktor Karl Einarsson, Tobias Thomsen, Oli Valur Omarsson could be supported by midfielders Agust Orri Thorsteinsson, Anton Logi Ludviksson and Hoskuldur Gunnlaugsson.

Lech Poznan possible starting lineup:

Mrozek; Douglas, Milic, Gurgul; Gumny, Pereira, Thordarson, Kozubal, Bengtsson; Ishak, Jagiello

Breidablik possible starting lineup:

A. Einarsson; Valgeirsson, Margeirsson, Orrason, Jonsson; Thorsteinsson, Ludviksson, Gunnlaugsson; V Einarsson, Thomsen, Omarsson

We say: Lech Poznan 2-1 Breidablik

Lech Poznan should be seen as favourites on Tuesday considering the visitors have rarely performed well in Europe.

However, Breidablik are likely to be competitive opponents considering the hosts have started their 2025-26 campaign poorly.
