Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Scottish League Cup clash between Ayr United and Forfar Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Ayr United will aim to maintain their winning momentum in the Scottish League Cup when they take on Forfar Athletic in Group D on Tuesday night.

The hosts are second in the standings with six points from two games, while the visitors are third in the table with two points from two matches.

Match preview

Ayr United competed for promotion from the Scottish Championship in 2024-25, finishing third in the league and securing a place in the promotion playoffs.

The Honest Men came up against Partick Thistle in the quarter-finals of the playoffs, and despite securing a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Ayr United were eliminated after a 2-0 second leg defeat.

Scott Brown, who took charge in January 2024, will be aiming for another push for promotion in 2025-26, and Ayr United have recorded a positive start to the competitive campaign.

The Honest Men defeated Annan Athletic 6-1 in their opening Scottish League Cup fixture, followed by a 4-0 victory over Arbroath on matchday two.

Those results leave Ayr United sitting second in the Group D standings with six points, just one point behind leaders St Mirren - who have played a game more than Brown's side.

Aiming to continue their winning start in the group, Ayr United take on a Forfar Athletic side that have taken two points from their two matches.

Forfar drew 1-1 with Annan Athletic in their opening Scottish League Cup match before securing a 4-2 penalty victory, followed by suffering a 2-1 loss to St Mirren last time out.

Their two points from two games leave Forfar sitting third in the standings, and they will be aiming for a victory on Tuesday to close the gap on Ayr United to just one point.

Ayr United have dominated this fixture at their home ground in recent meetings, with four wins, one draw and only one defeat in the last six games.

Team News

George Oakley has scored four goals in Ayr United's two Scottish League Cup matches, including a hattrick against Annan Athletic, and the striker is expected to lead the line once again here.

Curtis Main could also keep his place in attack after scoring twice in the 4-0 win over Arbroath, while the remainder of the team could also stay unchanged.

As for Forfar Athletic, despite suffering a defeat to St Mirren, a promising performance in the narrow loss could mean Jim Weir names a similar team.

Craig Slater, Jamie Richardson and Angus Mailer could start in central midfield, while Lewis Martin and Chris Scott feature from wide areas.

Ayr United possible starting lineup:

Mitchell; McAllister, Want, Holt, Dick; Walker, Murpy, McKenzie, Rus; Main, Oakley

Forfar Athletic possible starting lineup:

McCallum; Lorimer, Morrison, Dolzanski; Martin, Mailer, Slater, Richardson, Scott; Rennie, Shepherd
