AC Milan are yet to make contact with Liverpool over a move for striker Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Liverpool have reportedly had no contact with AC Milan over a move for striker Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window.

The Uruguay international moved to Anfield from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a club-record fee rising to around £85m.

Nunez has since contributed with 37 goals and 20 assists in 119 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, but he is yet to reach the heights expected on Merseyside and has struggled for regular game time under new head coach Arne Slot.

The 25-year-old has started only 12 of his 23 appearances for the Reds so far this season and in that time has recorded just four goals and three assists, including only two strikes in 14 Premier League outings.

Slot has preferred to use Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and ,at times, Cody Gakpo as a central striker ahead of Nunez this season, raising questions about the long-term future of Liverpool's No.9.

Recent reports in Italy had claimed that Serie A giants AC Milan were plotting an initial loan move for Nunez which would include a £41.5m obligation to buy in the summer.

Milan, Liverpool yet to hold talks over Nunez

However, the Daily Mail states that Milan are yet to make contact with Liverpool this month regarding their interest in the striker.

The report adds that the Premier League leaders are unlikely to permit Nunez a move away from Anfield without signing a suitable replacement.

With Liverpool currently well-placed to challenge in four different competitions during the second half of this season, Slot is keen to keep his squad intact ahead of an expected busy fixture schedule.

Milan's interest in Nunez comes at a time when they are currently languishing in eighth place in the Serie A table, 14 points behind leaders Atalanta BC, and they recently appointed Sergio Conceicao as their new head coach following the dismissal of Paulo Fonseca.

The Italian giants currently have two former Premier League strikers on their books in the form of Alvaro Morata and Tammy Abraham, who have netted five goals each in all competitions this season.

Luka Jovic is another striker contracted to Milan, but the Serbian has been reduced to just three appearances this term due to injury and will see his current deal at the club expire in six months' time.
