Preview: Leyton Orient vs. Mansfield Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Leyton Orient and Mansfield Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Mansfield Town will be aiming to avoid a sixth straight defeat in League One when they continue their campaign with a trip to Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

The visitors are currently 14th in the League One table, 11 points clear of the relegation zone, while Orient are ninth, three points off the playoff spots in England's third tier.

Orient have won 13, drawn five and lost 10 of their 28 League One matches this season to collect 44 points, which has left them in ninth spot in the table, three points off the playoff spots in the third tier of English football.

The O's were last in league action on February 1, suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Stockport County, while they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round on Saturday, going down 2-1 at home to Manchester City.

The team's performance against the reigning English champions was hugely encouraging, though, and they will have taken plenty from that match, with the London club now bidding to get their League One campaign back on track.

Richie Wellens's side have picked up 24 points from their 15 home league matches this season, recording seven wins in the process, and they will be welcoming a Mansfield outfit that have 19 points from their 14 games on their travels.

Orient have never played in the Championship, so it would be some story if they were able to navigate their way to promotion this term, and there have been plenty of positive signs already this season.

Mansfield were promoted from League Two last season, so their main aim for this term is to finish above the relegation spots, and by that standard, it has been a successful campaign thus far.

The Stags have a record of 11 wins, four draws and 13 defeats from their 28 league matches, which has left them in 14th spot in the table on 37 points, 11 points ahead of the bottom four.

Mansfield are on an incredibly poor run of form, though, losing each of their last six matches in all competitions, including their last five in League One to Wycombe Wanderers, Cambridge United, Crawley Town, Mansfield Town and Northampton Town.

Nigel Clough's side have not been victorious in the league since January 4, but their away form this season has been relatively strong, posting six wins from 14 matches, and they are better than their recent form suggests.

Mansfield have lost their last two matches against Orient, including a 1-0 defeat when the two teams last locked horns in London during the 2022-23 League Two campaign.

Team News

Lee Gregory in action for Mansfield Town on January 28, 2025© Imago

Charlie Kelman has been Orient's standout player in the final third of the field this season, finding the back of the net on 12 occasions, and the 23-year-old will lead the home side's line.

There will also be a spot in the side for Jamie Donley, who was denied a wonderful long-range goal against Man City in the FA Cup on Saturday, with his effort going down as an own goal from Stefan Ortega.

Dilan Markanday has scored twice in four appearances for Orient since his arrival on loan from Blackburn Rovers, meanwhile, and there will be another spot in the starting side for the 23-year-old.

As for Mansfield, there will be another start in the final third of the field for Lee Gregory, who has scored 10 times in 23 appearances during an impressive campaign to date.

Lucas Akins played in a wide area against Northampton on Friday night, and that could again be the case here, while Stephen McLaughlin will continue as the left-sided wing-back.

There should also be another start for Caylan Vickers, who made his debut as a starter last time out following a loan move from Brighton & Hove Albion in the final stages of the winter transfer window.

Leyton Orient possible starting lineup:
Keeley; Galbraith, Cooper, Happe, Currie; Pratley, Brown; Markanday, Donley, Abdulai; Kelman

Mansfield Town possible starting lineup:
Pym; Hewitt, Bowery, Flint; Akins, Baccus, Lewis, Maris, McLaughlin; Vickers, Gregory

We say: Leyton Orient 1-0 Mansfield Town

Orient were excellent against Man City last time out, and they will fancy their chances of returning to winning ways against an out-of-form Mansfield side. We are actually expecting this to be a close match in terms of the scoreline, but Orient should have enough to emerge victorious.
