From 86 previous head-to-heads between Aston Villa and Southampton, the two clubs share close to an identical number of victories, although the Lions just about hold the bragging rights with 34 wins compared to 29 for the South Coast outfit.
In fact, Villa have only surged ahead on the triumphs tally over the past three years, having won each of their last five Premier League matches against the Saints, netting 10 goals and conceding zero in that time.
A few weeks before he jetted off to Saudi Arabia, Jhon Duran came up with the only strike in a 1-0 win for Unai Emery's side in December 2024, a few months before Villa eased to a 3-0 St Mary's win over Simon Rusk's relegated men.
The Lions also did the double over the Saints in the 2022-23 Premier League season with a pair of 1-0 successes, but the triumph that kicked off Villa's winning sequence was far more emphatic, as Ollie Watkins, Philippe Coutinho, Douglas Luiz and former Southampton striker Danny Ings struck in a 4-0 home victory under Steven Gerrard in March 2022.
November 2021 was the last time that Southampton managed to slay the Lions, winning 1-0 on that occasion courtesy of an early Adam Armstrong strike, and there has not been a draw in this battle since a 1-1 stalemate in December 2015.
Not long before that, Southampton marched to the joint-biggest margin of victory in this fixture with a 6-1 slaughter of Villa at St Mary's in May 2015, where Sadio Mane scored the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history in just two minutes and 56 seconds.
However, it is another former Saints striker who is by far and away the highest scorer in this fixture, as Matt Le Tissier bagged 12 against Villa, the joint-most he ever scored against one opponent alongside Tottenham Hotspur.
