Newcastle United complete the signing of 21-year-old defender Harrison Ashby from West Ham United for an undisclosed fee.

Newcastle United have complete the signing of defender Harrison Ashby from West Ham United for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at St James' Park and becomes the Magpies' third signing of the January window after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Garang Kuol.

Speaking to Newcastle's official website on his arrival at the club, Ashby said: "I could not be happier. I can't get the smile off my face and it's a proud day for me and my family.

"I'm buzzing to come to the game tonight, to meet the fans and to get a taste of the atmosphere. I wouldn't be here today without West Ham, so I thank all the coaches that I had from growing up to now, but I'm delighted to be here."

Head coach Eddie Howe added: "Harrison is a very talented young player with a lot of potential so we are delighted to sign him.

"He has very good attributes so we are looking forward to working with him in this exciting new chapter of his career."

Ashby leaves West Ham after three years in East London, where he made a total of seven first-team appearances across all competitions.

The Scotland Under-21 international now joins a Newcastle outfit challenging for the Champions League positions, with Howe's side currently sitting third in the Premier League table, 21 points and 13 places above West Ham.
