Spain vs. France head-to-head record

Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record between Spain and France ahead of the UEFA Nations League final.

Long-standing rivals Spain and France will lock horns at San Siro on Sunday for the right to be named the champions of the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.

Spain booked their spot in the showpiece event courtesy of a 2-1 win over Euro 2020 holders Italy on Wednesday, with Ferran Torres scoring twice for La Roja.

France, meanwhile, came from two goals behind against Belgium to record a 3-2 victory, with Theo Hernandez netting a 90th-minute winner for Didier Deschamps's side.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the overall head-to-head record between the two sides ahead of the final.

In all, the two nations have locked horns on 35 occasions, and Spain lead the head-to-head record with 16 victories to France's 12, while there have also been seven draws.

The last two meetings between the teams have been friendlies, with Spain winning their last encounter 2-0 back in March 2017, while France recorded a 1-0 victory when they met in September 2014.

Sunday's clash will actually be the first competitive contest between Spain and France since they locked horns during qualification for the 2014 World Cup; Spain ran out 1-0 winners at Stade de France, while the points were shared in a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at Vicente Calderon.

The pair also locked horns in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, with Spain running out 2-0 winners courtesy of a brace from Xabi Alonso.

Each of their first 19 meetings were friendlies, with the first competitive contest not taking place until the final of Euro 1984, when France recorded a 2-0 victory to win the trophy for the first time in their history.

The two nations also locked horns in the group stage of Euro 1996, playing out a 1-1 draw, while France ran out 2-1 winners over Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2000.

Spain and France also met in the round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup; David Villa sent La Roja ahead, but the Blues answered back courtesy of goals from Franck Ribery, Patrick Vieira and Zinedine Zidane to record a 3-1 win.

Despite the rich history that exists, Sunday's contest will be their first competitive meeting for almost nine years and their first match up of any sort since March 2017, which is an indication of why the excitement is building.
