Liverpool-bound Hugo Ekitike is reportedly set to begin his Reds medical on Tuesday as he prepares to complete his big-money switch from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the striker will be earning more than Florian Wirtz at Anfield.
The Premier League champions have come to an agreement with their German counterparts over a deal for the 23-year-old, who will cost the Reds an initial £69m plus up to £10m in add-ons.
Liverpool moved for Ekitike following a brief approach for Newcastle United's Alexander Isak, whom the Frenchman could have replaced had he left St James' Park.
The Magpies were initially thought to have been at the head of the queue for Ekitike, whom they also tried and failed to sign in 2022, but a move was likely only realistic if Isak left the club.
Instead, the Swede is expected to stay put at St James' Park while Ekitike makes the switch to Anfield, and Florian Plettenberg reports that the former Paris Saint-Germain attacker will begin his medical with the English champions today.
Ekitike to 'start' Liverpool medical as salary package revealed
Plettenberg adds that the striker will pocket up to €15m (£13m) per year at Anfield, where he has already agreed a six-year contract until the end of the 2030-31 campaign.
Should Ekitike earn the full £13m per season during his time at Liverpool, the France Under-21 international would already become the third-highest earner at the club, according to data from Capology.
Only Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk would be taking home more than Ekitike, whose £13m wage packet will put him ahead of fellow new signing Wirtz, who is reportedly on just over £10m per year.
The 23-year-old will follow Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Armin Pecsi, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman to the club as Liverpool's seventh new arrival, but he will not be involved in their pre-season tour of Asia.
Ekitike departs Frankfurt with a stellar record of 26 goals and 14 assists in 64 appearances for Die Adler in all competitions, including 22 strikes during the 2024-25 campaign.
How Arne Slot 'seduced' Ekitike into joining Liverpool
Regardless of what happens with Darwin Nunez's future, Ekitike will be expected to displace the Uruguayan and become Liverpool's first-choice number nine soon after his arrival.
The erstwhile Reims starlet recently held a video call with head coach Arne Slot - according to L'Equipe - where the Dutchman outlined his vision for Ekitike and how he would thrive in his system.
The 23-year-old was apparently 'seduced' by this exchange, as Slot laid out his plans for his new arrival both in and out of possession as the target man in his 4-2-3-1 system.
Ekitike could make his Reds debut in one of their two friendlies with Athletic Bilbao on August 4, while the Liverpool squad on tour are currently gearing up to meet AC Milan on Saturday in Hong Kong.
