Arsenal transfer news update: Barcelona see striker as 'option', with Mikel Arteta keen to sign forward

'Attractive option': Will Barca beat Gunners to the signature of striker?

Mikel Arteta may face competition in the summer from Barcelona for a striker, with the Arsenal boss keen to add to his forward line.

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has reportedly emerged as an option for Barcelona in the summer transfer window, potentially scuppering Arsenal's plans.

The Gunners beat PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the team having all but qualified for the quarter-finals, where they will play either Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid.

However, the Londoners have fallen behind Liverpool in the Premier League, and it is difficult to see them closing the 13-point gap to the Merseysiders.

Boss Mikel Arteta has had to deal with numerous injuries to his first-choice attackers and has even utilised midfielder Mikel Merino as a striker in recent weeks.

It is no surprise that the Gunners have been linked to Sesko, but Fichajes claim that the RB Leipzig forward has become an 'attractive option' for Barcelona.

Should Sesko sign for Arsenal?

Following injuries to Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal's options in attack have shrunk considerably.

The Gunners have only produced the eighth highest xG figure in the division and have scored 15 fewer goals than league-leaders Liverpool (66).

Sesko is a combative centre-forward and would be able to act as a focal point for the likes of Martin Odegaard, who has struggled in his attacking midfield role without a natural striker occupying opposition defenders.

It should be noted that Sesko has only scored 10 goals in the Bundesliga this season, so perhaps the 21-year-old would benefit from being eased into the starting XI.

Should Sesko sign for Barcelona?

Barcelona beat Benfica 1-0 in their Champions League round of 16 clash on Wednesday night, with Raphinha scoring his 25th goal of the season.

The winger has played a supportive role next to legendary striker Robert Lewandowski, who has found the back of the net 35 times for Barca this campaign.

However, the Polish forward is 36 years old, and it remains to be seen if he can continue producing in the final third into his late thirties.

Sesko could initially come in as cover for Lewandowski before taking up more of his minutes, and his physical presence may allow him to form strong relationships with both Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.
