Newcastle United will be looking to equal a 16-year record when they play host to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle United will be looking to equal a 16-year record when they square off against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies are currently viewed as one of the teams of the season having collected 21 points from their opening 12 league matches.

Just one defeat has been recorded during that time, their 2-1 defeat at Liverpool coming as a result of a 98th-minute goal.

Since then, Eddie Howe has witnessed his team put together a seven-match unbeaten streak in the top flight, leading to the club moving into the top four of the table.

The North East giants have played one game more than Chelsea and Manchester United, who sit behind them on goal difference and by one point respectively.

Nevertheless, Newcastle are now regarded as challengers for Champions League qualification, helped by a return of 13 points from a possible 15 during October.

A goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford is sandwiched between wins over Fulham, Brentford, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Should Newcastle record maximum points against Villa at the weekend, it will represent their best-ever points return in a calendar month in the Premier League since 2006.

Newcastle would equal the 16-point accumulation from April of that year, that return also occurring across six fixtures.

Back then, Glenn Roeder's side beat Spurs, Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion before being held to a goalless draw at Birmingham City.

Newcastle are also looking to protect a 13-match unbeaten home record against Villa in the Premier League, that run beginning in December 2005.
