Manchester United may have to brace themselves for competition from Chelsea in the summer transfer window for their ideal Andre Onana replacement.

Manchester United are reportedly braced for competition from Chelsea for Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils will play Newcastle United on Sunday in the Premier League, and shot-stopper Andre Onana will be hoping to retain his place between the posts.

United drew 2-2 with Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday, with Onana arguably at fault for both of the French side's goals.

Boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly considering dropping the 29-year-old from his starting lineup on Sunday amidst speculation that the Portuguese manager could look to replace him in the summer.

However, Football Insider claim that Chelsea are also keen on signing rumoured target Fofana, though the likes of Newcastle, Brentford and Wolves have all been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old.

Do United or Chelsea need a goalkeeper more?

When Onana was signed from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, expectations were high given the Cameroonian had impressed with the ball at his feet in Italy.

However, former boss Erik ten Hag's system exposed the shot-stopper to numerous shots and limited the impact he could have in possession, and his deficiencies have become routinely exposed.

Onana has made numerous high-profile errors, and it is difficult to see how current head coach Amorim can move forward at Old Trafford without a reliable presence behind his defence.

It would also be surprising if Chelsea did not make an addition in the summer given their history of spending under Todd Boehly, as well as the fact that Robert Sanchez has struggled at Stamford Bridge.

Manager Enzo Maresca has also utilised Filip Jorgensen in goal this season, but the Danish shot-stopper has failed to impress.

Considering the Blues are sixth in the league and in the race for a Champions League spot, perhaps signing a new number one would push them towards the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.

Having said that, United are 13th in the table and their need for a new goalkeeper is arguably far greater than Chelsea, who can at least rely upon strong performances from their outfield players.
