Manchester United have reportedly cancelled a proposed loan switch for Sekou Kone, with the midfielder now expected to be a part of Ruben Amorim's squad for the 2025-26 campaign.
Kone made the move to Old Trafford from Guidars FC in 2024, and he made 13 appearances for the Red Devils at Under-21s level last term, in addition to playing once for the Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League.
The 19-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for Man United in a competitive match, but he was involved in their post-season fixtures against ASEAN All-Stars and Hong Kong, China.
Kone was also in the squad for the pre-season friendly against Leeds United on Saturday, while he has made the trip to the United States for the club's pre-season tour, which will see them take part in the Premier League Summer Series.
According to journalist Nathan Salt, Kone had been expected to join Lausanne Sport on loan for the 2025-26 campaign, with Man United believing such a move would be best for his development.
Man United 'shelve plans' to loan out Kone
However, it is understood that the loan move has now been cancelled, as Kone has made a big impression on manager Amorim and the rest of the coaching staff at the club.
The teenager is now expected to remain with Man United for the 2025-26 campaign, and there is seemingly a spot open in central midfield that he is capable of grabbing.
The 20-time English champions are next in action against West Ham United this weekend, while they will also take on Bournemouth and Everton during their pre-season tour of the United States.
Bruno Fernandes is expected to operate in a deeper spot this season, while Casemiro, Toby Collyer, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte are also options in the middle of midfield.
Amorim admitted to midfield issues after Leeds clash
Following the goalless draw with Leeds on Saturday, Amorim highlighted one major issue in relation to his midfield.
"We suffered a little bit when we tried to press high," Amorim toldĀ MUTV. "They kicked the ball with the second ball, they were dangerous in that moment. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, and you can feel that's hard to bring the ball."
Kone has the energy and pace that Amorim is referring to, and there is every chance that he could break into the first XI in the coming season if given the opportunity.
Man United are in the market for a new central midfielder, but the answer to their issue could already be at the club, with Kone showing huge potential during his short time at Old Trafford.
