Manchester City have announced the signing of highly-rated teenage midfielder Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg.
The 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract until June 2030 and moves to the Etihad Stadium for a reported £12.5m, which represents a record sale for a player in the Norwegian Eliteserien.
The likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa held talks with Nypan earlier this year along with Man City, but the Citizens eventually reached an agreement to sign the Norway Under-21 international in the middle of last month before he underwent a medical.
The reasons behind his delayed arrival at Man City are unknown, but he has now been confirmed as Pep Guardiola’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window after left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, playmaker Rayan Cherki and backup goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
“I am incredibly happy and proud to have joined Manchester City,” Nypan told the club’s official website. “It’s a dream for any young footballer to become part of this club and to join such a group of world class talent.

Nypan is an “exciting young player” with “numerous standout qualities”
“I am still very young with a lot to learn but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world, will only help me to become a better player.
“There is already a special connection between Norway and Manchester City through Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb, and I am very proud to have become the latest Norwegian player to have joined the club.”
Man City’s new director of football Hugo Viana added: “Sverre is an exciting young player that the club has been monitoring for quite some time now.
“We feel that he already has numerous standout qualities but that at only 18 years of age, he is only going to continue to improve.
“We believe he will be an important asset for Manchester City in the years to come and we will support him every step of the way in his development.”
What is Man City’s plan for Nypan? First-team integration or loan exit?
Nypan has established himself as one of the brightest prospects in Europe since becoming Rosenborg’s youngest-ever player at the age of just 15 when he made his senior debut in 2022.
The all-round midfielder made a total of 70 senior appearances across all competitions for Rosenborg, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists, while he has also earned six international caps for Norway’s Under-21s.
Since the arrival of Viana at the beginning of this year, Man City have signed several highly-rated youngsters including Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, Claudio Echeverri, Juma Bah, Cherki and now Nypan.
While some of those players have already been integrated into Guardiola’s senior squad, others like Nypan are expected to head out on loan in the 2025-26 campaign, though an immediate exit is not yet lined up.
It has previously been suggested that Man City have an agreement to loan at least one of their players to Lyon - who have successfully appealed their relegation from Ligue 1 - following the £34m signing of French attacker Cherki last month.
As things stand, Nypan is set to begin pre-season training with Man City’s first team on July 28, but whether he will still be at the club before their friendly fixture against Palermo on August 9 remains to be seen.
