Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly one of five European clubs to make a formal offer for Palmeiras star Richard Rios, yet remain as underdogs for his signature.
Having impressed for the Brasileiro giants in recent season, Rios' stock had already been on the rise before his appearances at the Club World Cup.
However, chipping in with two assists from five games and helping Palmeiras to the quarter-finals of that competition has only intensified interest in his signature.
As a result, there have been widespread reports over the 25-year-old being available for a fee in the region of £26m this summer, with Roma known to be admirers.
Nevertheless, according to GE Globo, six other clubs are seemingly being more proactive for the Colombia international.
Who are favourites to sign Richard Rios?
The report claims that Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Porto and Zenit St Petersburg have all put together official proposals for the player.
Instead, it is suggested that Benfica have emerged as the favourites to wrap up a deal if they are prepared to meet Palmeiras' asking price.
Although Benfica are yet to make a bid for Rios, the central midfielder is allegedly attracted by an opportunity to move to the Portuguese giants where he would play Champions League football.
Discreet discussions over a potential deal are also said to have impressed the relevant parties, effectively leaving Benfica with a decision to make over how they wish to proceed.
While Rios still has over three years left on his Palmeiras, it appears that his club are prepared to facilitate his exit under the right conditions.
How can Wolves, Forest beat Benfica for Rios?
Despite appearing to be outsiders, Wolves will hope that they can still gazump Benfica with the arrival of one of Rios's international teammates.
Colombian compatriot Jhon Arias is leaving Fluminense for Wolves over the coming days to join a growing contingent of South American players at Molineux.
Yerson Mosquera is also of the same nationality, while Rios would have the chance to work with Brazil internationals Andre and Joao Gomes in the engine room.
That said, Rios is seemingly prepared to favour Champions League football over Premier League action.
