Neil Warnock ends his retirement from management to return to former club Huddersfield Town for the remainder of the season.

Neil Warnock has made a sensational return to football to take over the reins at Huddersfield Town, one of his former clubs.

Last week, the Terriers opted to end Mark Fotheringham's stint as head coach after just 21 matches with the club struggling to get out of the Championship relegation zone.

Their recent misery continued at the weekend as they suffered a late 1-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Wigan Athletic, leaving club officials with much to ponder.

Rather than hand out another long-term contract, Huddersfield have instead secure a reunion with one of the club's most renown former figures.

Warnock managed the Yorkshire outfit between 1993 and 1995, guiding the club into the second tier of English football through the Division Two playoffs.

In the days after that Wembley triumph, Warnock departed the role, but he now returns to the John Smith's Stadium over 27-and-a-half years after his exit.

After being removed from his last position at Middlesbrough in November 2021, Warnock - now 74 years of age - revealed that would be his last job in football.

However, he has now been tempted back into the sport to take on his 19th job, and he has suggested that his former ties with the club played a part in his decision.

Speaking to the club's official website, Warnock said: "I'm really excited about this challenge. My first spell at Huddersfield Town had everything; we went to Wembley twice, moved into the new stadium, and really built the club from nothing. It was a special time.

"I'm coming back to help the club, but also Dean Hoyle. I know what he has done behind-the-scenes and I've always had a lot of time for him.

"I've looked at the fixtures and we've got some fantastic games to come. I want to come back and put smiles on faces."

Huddersfield have stated that Warnock will officially take over on Thursday, a day after Huddersfield have faced Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

Interim boss Narcis Pelach will remain in charge for that fixture, with victory potentially being enough to move the club out of the bottom three.
