Aston Martin says there's still a possibility that Fernando Alonso could remain on the Formula 1 grid in green beyond 2026.
While the 43-year-old Spaniard's current contract includes provisions for a future role with the team — likely as a brand ambassador or in management — the only guaranteed race seat runs through the end of next season.
That means Alonso is confirmed to drive the Adrian Newey-led 2026 car project, but his post-2026 future remains open.
"Time will tell," team principal Andy Cowell said at Imola when asked whether Alonso could still be racing at age 46 or beyond.
"Right now we're looking forward to 2026. It's fantastic that both Fernando and Lance (Stroll) have signed until 2026. With the regulation change, we have stability and experience, and we'll see what happens," he told El Mundo Deportivo.
When pressed on whether it will be Alonso or the team who decides on 2027, Cowell kept things diplomatic.
"I think, as always, it depends on both parties," he replied. "We have a clear goal of creating stronger race cars year after year, and Fernando and any driver always want to be in the best car."
Asked whether Alonso could finally achieve his long-held dream of becoming a triple world champion with Aston Martin, Cowell added: "That would be lovely."
While recent seasons have brought stagnating results for the Silverstone-based team, a major aerodynamic update appears to have delivered a boost at Imola.
However, much of the excitement revolves around the 2026 overhaul, with Newey now solely focused on the next-generation car under new regulations.
But even with Newey's genius on board, Cowell isn't making bold predictions just yet.
"No," he admitted when asked if he was confident the 2026 car would be a winner out of the gate.
"There isn't a single team principal up and down this pitlane who can say yes to that. What is clear is that we want to create a multi-race-winning car, and therefore a championship-winning car, but none of us can sit here and say yes to that."
