Jos Verstappen says speculation about a rift with his son Max is unfounded, despite his low profile in the Formula 1 paddock this season.
The former F1 driver has rarely been seen in the Red Bull garage or elsewhere in the paddock in 2025, following his high-profile involvement in the Christian Horner saga last year.
His absence has led to rumours ranging from team-imposed distancing to a personal falling out with the reigning quadruple world champion.
In Monaco, however, Verstappen senior reappeared for the first time since pre-season testing in Bahrain.
"Sometimes it might be good that I wasn't there," the 53-year-old told De Telegraaf.
He insisted there is no issue behind the scenes.
"People make things up," said Jos. "We talk every day, and our bond is very strong. But Max has his own life, as I do, and I don't want to be a father who interferes with everything.
"Over the years, I've learned that you have to let things take their own course."
He added that his absence is also down to personal commitments.
"It was also due to my rallying, which I really enjoy. Also, my wife has health problems, so I want to be there for her too."
And when it comes to the sport itself, Jos admitted he feels less connected than in the past.
"I think everyone also knows that I find Formula 1 a less exciting environment than it used to be," he said. "But the most important thing is that Max is in his place and everything is going as usual."
"I don't have to be there, either. I can easily live without Formula 1."
