Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean believes that Wolverhampton Wanderers took a gamble when they sacked Mick McCarthy.

Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean has claimed that Wolverhampton Wanderers took a gamble when they sacked Mick McCarthy.

The Irishman was dismissed last month after nearly six years in charge at Molineux.

After interviewing a number of candidates in what became a protracted process, the club appointed McCarthy's assistant Terry Connor on an interim basis until the end of the season.

"I think changing a manager late is always a gamble and that is up to the owners of the club to look at it. Mick will be gutted because I'm sure he will be confident he could have turned it around," said Kean.

"Terry was a part of that and when they were doing the interviews he was probably thinking he would be leaving as well then it turned around."

Kean takes his Rovers side to Wolves in a relegation battle later today.
