One of the picks of the first-round matches at the Queen’s Club Championships sees Rebecca Sramkova and 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova face off on Tuesday for a place in the second round against Emma Raducanu or Cristina Bucsa.
Krejcikova has had an injury-laden 2025, with a back injury keeping out the two-time Grand Slam champion out of action for much of the year, but she hopes to get off to a solid start on grass in preparation for a strong title defence at the Championships.
Match preview
Sramkova may have been beaten by Iga Swiatek again in Paris, but the 28-year-old's performance was undeniably superior to January's in Australia.
While she only managed two games Down Under, the world No. 41 notched three in each set in the French capital, even if she was ultimately unable to resist a first-round loss at Roland Garros.
The upshot of that loss to the four-time French Open champion means that the Slovak enters this year's WTA event at the Queen's Club — the first of its kind since 1973 — on a two-match losing run and strives to avoid a third.
Although the former world No. 36 has struggled for consistency, underscored by not winning back-to-back matches since February, the world No. 41 has not suffered three defeats on the trot this season. Aiming to keep that run going, the Slovak, who enters Tuesday's first-round match at 10-15 for the season, seeks an 11th to progress at the WTA 500 event.
That outcome is feasible considering that Sramkova's opponent is an undercooked Krejcikova, who has barely played competitively in 2025.
A troublesome back injury has kept the Czech star out of action for much of the year, having missed the Australian Open and several months before returning in Strasbourg on the eve of the French Open.
That comeback unsurprisingly ended early at the hands of Magda Linette, but the 29-year-old secured her first victory of 2025 in a tournament-opening success over Tatjana Maria; however, there would be no third-round appearance as the eight-time WTA champion fell to Veronika Kudermetova in the second round in Paris.
Thus, the world No. 17 begins her run in West Kensington at 1-2 for the season and hopes to double her tally of victories by outlasting Sramkova.
Having held a 9-2 record on grass last year, reaching the quarters in Birmingham and winning Wimbledon either side of a swift exit in Eastbourne, the former world No. 2 strives for a positive outcome to hopefully build her momentum heading into her title defence at the break forth.
Head To Head
Both women face off for the first time, and Sramkova and Krejcikova seek victories to notch a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head.
The Slovak might not have a winning record this season (10-15), but her 10 victories significantly outdo Krejcikova’s one (1-2) before Tuesday’s contest.
We say: Sramkova to win in three sets
Having defeated four opponents outside the top 40 and below No. 100 in the past 52 weeks, Krejcikova has lost three of such matches in the previous four, suggesting struggles for the Czech player on Tuesday.
While the 29-year-old's 52-week results on the surface are admirable, her lack of competitive match action could be detrimental against Sramkova.
