Another chapter in the Cascadia Cup rivalry between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders takes place on Sunday when the two teams clash at BC Place Stadium.
The Caps still lead the Western Conference despite a 0-0 draw with Minnesota United in their previous MLS affair, while the Rave Green are fourth, losing 3-2 to those same Loons last weekend.
Match preview
A memorable run to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final went up in smoke last weekend as the Whitecaps self-destructed early and often in a 5-0 defeat to Cruz Azul.
Sunday should be a massive test of this team’s mettle after one of the few setbacks the Whitecaps have suffered under Jesper Sorensen.
Two of their next three matches in this competition will take place in Vancouver, where they have won five times in MLS this year, one fewer than their regular season total in 2024.
For a side that found the back of the net with ease at the start of 2025, it has not been so easy of late, with the Caps failing to score in consecutive competitive fixtures, including a Champions Cup defeat where they failed to register a single shot.
That said, they are on a 10-match unbeaten run domestically and can set a new club record for the longest point streak in their MLS era with a win or draw on Sunday.
The Caps have not suffered consecutive defeats across all competitions since losing their final four regular season contests of 2024.
Last weekend, we witnessed an uncharacteristically poor defensive outing by the Seattle Sounders at home to Minnesota United.
Brian Schmetzer’s side saw a two-match shutout run end in the process, conceding two more goals last Sunday than they had in their previous three league contests.
Like Vancouver, the Sounders have not suffered consecutive defeats this season but are winless in their last two MLS away games.
Seattle have claimed just one victory in the league this year when conceding first but have not lost in 2025 when netting the opener.
During the previous regular season, the Sounders had the joint-most away wins in the Western Conference (eight) but have the third fewest so far this year (two).
The Rave Green have won their last two visits to BC Place against the Caps, winning this exact fixture last season by a score of 3-0.

Team News
The only injury concern for the Whitecaps is captain Ryan Gauld, who is nearing a return from a knee issue, while Brian White (USA), Pedro Vite (Ecuador), Jayden Nelson (Canada) and Tate Johnson (USA Under-20) are all unavailable due to the international window.
Also, away for the international break will be Andres Cubas (Paraguay), Guiseppe Bovalina (Australia Under-23), Sebastian Berhalter (USA), Ali Ahmed (Canada) and Sam Adekugbe (Canada).
Yohei Takaoka only faced one targeted effort against Minnesota as he collected his seventh clean sheet of the domestic campaign.
On the Seattle side of things, Jordan Morris and Yeimar Gomez Andrade missed their previous game due to hamstring strains, Kim Kee-hee sat out with a sore calf and Paul Arriola did not feature because of a knee issue.
Three of their players are on international duty, with Reed Baker-Whiting called up to the USA Under-20 team, Stuart Hawkins on the US Under-19 squad and Osaze De Rosario a part of Guyana.
Kalani Kossa-Rienzi and an own-goal from Nicolas Romero was all the Sounders could manage scoring wise against the Loons last weekend.
Vancouver Whitecaps possible starting lineup:
Takaoka; Laborda, Veselinovic, Blackmon, Ocampo; Badwal, Priso, Ngando; Sabbi, Rios, Kreilach
Seattle Sounders possible starting lineup:
Frei; A. Roldan, Burney, Bell, Tolo; Vargas, C. Roldan; De la Vega, Rusnak, Rothrock; Musovski
We say: Vancouver Whitecaps 0-2 Seattle Sounders
The Caps are missing so many key contributors that it will be difficult to see them to bounce back this weekend, while it may take some time to recover after the beating they received from Cruz Azul.
